Marine Barracks represents the oldest military facility operated by the United States Marine Corps. It is located in Washington, DC and is spread over just 6 acres. This site is managed by Paul D. Montanus and has been a National Historic Landmark since 1976. Unlike many other facilities operated by the United States Marine Corps, this structure is also open to the public. They do visit, but only on certain occasions, ceremonies and parades.

Date

Marine Barracks are located in some of the oldest buildings in Washington. The building had close ties to Thomas Jefferson, the then president of the United States. The President spent several days with one of his most trusted commanders to find a suitable location for a new facility. The installation is said to be close to the Washington Navy Yard. As soon as the site was chosen, it was architect George Hadfield who took on this major responsibility. The facility was established in 1801 and became operational.

He went through some tough times during the War of 1812, when British armed forces burned Washington. However, the installation is not affected. Taken and left as is. The British hoped to make it a headquarters, but left the country without completing the mission. Most of the original buildings were renovated and rebuilt in the early 20th century. Today, only one original building remains – the commander’s house. Naval Barracks may boast being the oldest government building in Washington, but many historians debate whether the commander’s home is older than the White House. According to some studies, the White House could be out of date for a year.

Mission

The military objectives of the Marine Corps Barracks are not as clear-cut as they were decades ago. Most military assignments involve correspondence training sessions for the Marine Corps. Most of these courses are taught by the local Marine Corps academy. The courses are also open to other armed forces in the country. Additionally, the setup also provides readiness for MOS (Military Occupation Task Force), not to mention dealing with the armed forces guarding the nearby White House and Camp David.

The facility is more common in the region when it comes to targets with less obvious military purposes. He was responsible for accompanying the Marine Corps’ official burial and accompanying other officials from the other armed forces. For country functions, the army in the field administers the honor guard during certain ceremonies and parades. There are two popular parades held at the scene that attract thousands of civilians.

To fulfill its mission, Marine Barracks selects and organizes its services to strict standards. They must meet weight and height requirements and have a clean professional background. This is because they perform at official ceremonies, parades, and funerals. Some parades are held for presidential purposes, so there is no room for failure.

The history of the unit can be traced to the early days of the Marine Corps. In the 18th and 19th centuries military musicians, or “field musics,” provided a means of passing commands to Marines in battle formations. The sound of various drum beats and bugle calls could be easily heard over the noise of the battlefield and signaled Marines to attack the enemy or retire for the evening. Through the 1930’s, Marine Corps posts were still authorized a number of buglers and drummers to play the traditional calls and to ring a ship’s bell to signal the time.

The United States Marine Drum \u0026 Bugle Corps was formed in 1934 to augment the United States Marine Band. The unit provided musical support to ceremonies around the nation’s capitol and, during World War II, was tasked with Presidential support duties. For this additional role, they were awarded the scarlet and gold breast cord by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, which they still proudly display on their uniform.

When the war ended, the Drum \u0026 Bugle Corps resumed performing at various military and public ceremonies.

In the early 1950s the unit gained considerable acclaim performing for an increasing number of civilian audiences. Music composed specifically for their unique selection of instruments helped establish their reputation for excellence during this period. These factors also led to the unit’s formal designation as “The Commandant’s Own”—a title noting their unique status as musicians for the Commandant of the Marine Corps.

In the tradition of their “field music” predecessors, these musicians in “The Commandant’s Own” are Marines in the truest sense of the word. Every enlisted member is a graduate of Marine Corps recruit training and is trained in basic infantry skills. Prior to enlisting, each Marine must pass a demanding audition for service in the Drum u0026 Bugle Corps. Following Recruit Training and Marine Combat Training, the Marines are assigned to “The Commandant’s Own.”

The unit travels the world along with the United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon and the Official Color Guard of the Marine Corps as the United States Marine Corps Battle Color Detachment.
