background
Previously, it was Orange County, the land that makes up what are now Johnston, Bladen, and Granville counties. And before that it was inhabited by the Eno, the Occaneechi and the Haw, among other Native American groups. The county was founded in 1752 and took its name from William V of Orange.
Hillsborough NC
Hillsborough (then Childsburgh), and has since been the seat of Orange County. Among the many important historical events here, Hillsborough played an important role in thewar of rulesfrom 1764-71. Indeed, after the Battle of Alamance in 1771, six governing bodies were hanged at Hillsborough.
The North Carolina State Legislature and British General Cornwallis used Hillsborough as a base during parts of the Revolutionary War. When visiting, you will notice some historical markers scattered throughout the city. Most of them are reminiscent of Hillsborough’s importance before and during the Revolution.
Chapel Hill NC
After the war, the new state of North Carolina introduced a plan based on its constitution to provide affordable schools and universities. In 1789 the University of North Carolina was founded and the town of Chapel Hill established to serve the new university.
The school began teaching in 1795 and is the oldest public institution housing classes and graduates. Thanks to its inseparable relationship with UNC and the rise of the university, the city has grown and remains an influential city in the current Research Triangle area and in North Carolina in general.
Carrboro NC
Compared to Chapel Hill and Hillsborough, Carrboro is a much newer town. Settlement in 1882 was largely due to a state statute prohibiting railroads from operating within a mile of UNC. The authors believed that the regulation would “prevent possible damage to students’ morale and academic habits.”
Originally known as the West End, the town’s growth accelerated after the construction of the Alberta Cotton Mill. Julian Shakespeare Carr, a man with a troubled legacy, bought the mill. However, when the city was incorporated in 1911, it was renamed Venable before finally moving to Carrboro in 1913.
Carrboro’s fortunes grew, floating with the mill’s current. It finally broke its reliance on the textile industry in the 1960s. Fortunately, the city’s proximity to UNC at Chapel Hill helped provide ample employment opportunities for Carrboro residents.
