Multi-read content where are you going where have you been summary

Connie, fifteen years old, is preoccupied with her looks. Her mother scolds her for admiring herself in the mirror, but Connie ignores her mother’s criticism. Connie’s mother encourages her to be tidy and responsible like her older sister June. June, 24 years old and still living at home, works as a secretary at Connie’s High School. She saves money, helps her parents and gets lots of compliments on her growth while Connie spends her time daydreaming. Her father works a lot and rarely speaks to his daughter, but her mother constantly nags Connie. Connie is often so heartbroken that she wishes her mother and she were dead.

Connie is grateful that June set a good precedent: June dates her friend, so her mother allows Connie to date her best friend too. The father of one of Connie’s friends drove them to a downtown mall and later picked them up without asking how they were spending their time. Girls often sneak across the highway to an indoor drive-in restaurant and meet guys.

One night a boy named Eddie invited Connie to dinner and Connie left his friend at the restaurant counter to go with him. As they passed the parking lot, she saw a man in a gold convertible. He smiled at her and said, “I’ll get you, honey.” Connie hurried off and Eddie didn’t notice. They spend three hours together, in a restaurant and then in an alley.

Connie spends the summer hiding from her mother’s nosy questions and daydreaming about the boys she meets. One Sunday, her parents and June left her home alone while they went to the family barbecue. Connie sullenly washed her hair and basked in the sun. When she had warmed up, she went inside and listened to the radio. She was startled by the sound of a car moving in her driveway. From the window she saw that it was a gold convertible and she was afraid. She went into the kitchen, looked out the screen door, and realized the driver was the man she’d seen in the parking lot the night she’d met Eddie.

The man grinned and started talking to her. Connie was careful not to show interest and told him several times that she didn’t know who he was. He got out of the car and pointed to the words painted on the door. His name, Arnold Friend, is written next to a picture of a smiling round face that Connie mistakes for a pumpkin wearing sunglasses. In the car was another man, whom Arnold introduced as his girlfriend, Ellie.

Arnold asks Connie to get in the car, but she says she has “work” to do. He laughed, and Connie noticed that he seemed unsteady on his feet. She asked how he knew her name and he said he knew a lot about her. He crossed out her friends’ names and told her where her parents were. He wanted to know what she thought and told her that she was going out with him tonight. He asked if she saw his sign and drew a big X in the air. Connie thinks she recognizes its parts, but doesn’t know how or where. When she asked him how old he was, he stopped laughing and said they were the same age, or maybe he was just a little bit older, which she knew immediately was a lie. To distract her, he teases Ellie, who is listening to music in the car. He looked a lot older than Connie, which made her dizzy with fear.

Connie tells Arnold to go, but he insists on taking her with him. She recognized his voice as that of a man on the radio. She told him to go again, and she felt dizzy with fear again when he started telling her what her parents were doing at the barbecue at that very moment. She was both appalled and fascinated by his precise descriptions. Arnold tells Connie that she is his mistress and will give in and love him. She yelled that he was crazy and started backing out the front door. She asked him to leave and threatened to call the police. Arnold, who staggered to the porch, told her he wouldn’t follow her inside — unless she picked up the phone and tried to call the police. She tried to lock the door but her fingers were shaking. Arnold points out that he can break down doors. She asked him what he wanted and he said he wanted her, that after seeing her that night he knew she was the one for him. He becomes more threatening and tells her that he will do something terrible to her family when she gets home if she doesn’t leave the house.

Arnold asked Connie if she knew one of her neighbors, a woman who owned chickens. Shocked, Connie replies that the woman is dead. Arnold again tells her to get out or her family will get hurt.

Connie ran out the door and picked up the phone. In a hasty, blurry shot, something happens: Connie is sweating and yells for her mother; she cannot dial the phone; and Arnold “stabs her. . . again and again without tenderness. Oates doesn’t say exactly what happened, but in the last scene, Connie sits on the floor, stunned and scared.

From the door, Arnold tells her to put the phone back on and she obeys. He softly told her where they were going and told her to get out. She thought to herself that she would never see her mother again and wondered what to do. At his command she stood up. She felt like she was watching her walk to the door, open it and walk towards Arnold. He commented on her blue eyes even though she had brown eyes. Connie looked out over the vast land beyond and knew that was where she wanted to go.
