About Don’t Hate Players

By day, Emilia is a field hockey star with a famous boyfriend and a mother obsessed with her academic future. But at night, she virtually kicks ass as the only female member of a highly competitive eSports team. Emilia has mastered the art of keeping her two worlds alive, which keeps them separate at all times.

When a major eSports tournament comes to her town, Emilia is determined to prove herself to the male gaming community. But their perfectly balanced life is turned upside down when a member of the opposing team – Jake – recognizes them. . .

From an exciting new talent, this sweet and captivating YA romance will capture the hearts of gamers and non-players alike.

Don't Hate the Player on Goodreads

my magazine

Okay, first off, the tone of this book is just amazing. The dialogues are funny and nerdy and I absolutely love it. It was super interesting reading.

PLAYERS SHOULD NOT be played from two angles: Jakes and Emilias. Emilia’s chapters are all first-person, and Jake’s is a mix of third-person narration or chat transcripts from online chats with his teammates. I like this format very much. The only time it feels a bit weird for me is at the beginning because it’s like I’m narrating something that happened between Jake and Emilia in the past. When I realized that the entire narration would be written like this by Jake, I thought it made more sense, but maybe it wasn’t what I expected from the opening? Like I said, once I got into the book, this opening made a lot more sense.

I like many characters. Everyone is so unique that I can tell who is speaking and I love that. I also love how her relationship with Emilia changes throughout the story. There’s a scene at the end with her parents that I LOVE.

One of the things that struck me is that I don’t think there are any good white girls in this book. Maybe I just noticed that because I read DON’T HATE THE PLAYER right after reading HANI AND ISHU’S MANUAL FORMAT and I noticed that in this book too.

That’s not a criticism. I don’t think books should have good white girls. It’s just something that caught my eye and made me want to sit down, you know? To think about how it would be for you to read and enjoy a book that doesn’t involve/describe myself positively. I think that’s a good thing to think about. I tried to think what I would think of the books if the only girls who looked like me were acting like bully, mean girls. (Of course, that doesn’t happen with white characters, no matter how hard I try.) Anyway, it gave me some time to reflect on how important it is to perform well when there aren’t that many stories about a particular community.

Another thing I think this book does really well is delve into some of the conversations about gambling behavior, specifically predatory behavior and cruelty towards girls and female gamers. It’s not about raw content, but the story doesn’t shy away from the feel of being a gamer. I also like how DON’T TRY PLAYERS demonstrates the different relationship dynamics between Team Unity players and Team Fury players.

All in all, this book has a lot to offer. Readers who enjoy witty jokes and rich characters will definitely want to read this book.

Don’t Hate the Player…Hate the Game

by Katie Ashley

For Noah Sullivan being the best friend to a douchebag and player like Jake Nelson has never been easy. It’s been a rocky road since kindergarten when Jake duct taped Noah to his chair before recess. With just six weeks to high school graduation, Jake accidentally blows his drunken ass up on his grandfather’s tractor, and Noah finds himself immersed not only in a whirlwind of grief, but on a quest to find a mystery girl from Jake’s past.

While cleaning out Jake’s room, Noah and Jake’s dad make a startling discovery. Instead of the obligatory porn collection or pot stash, they find a ring, but not just any ring. Its half a carat of commitment in a platinum setting-proving even man whores have taste. After Jake’s mom pleads with Noah to find the girl who meant so much to Jake, Noah begins a modern day Grail quest to track the girl down.

Since Jake was a notorious player with a legendary collection of trophy panties, Noah finds himself in over his head. There are the usual suspects like Avery, the Ice Princess Jake dated for appearances, or Presley, the school mattress Jake dated for convenience. But the trail begins to point to the most unlikely of suspects: Maddie, the Valedictorian and choir girl who was trying to help the unmotivated jock graduate–the girl who also has surprisingly caught Noah’s eye and meddled with his heart.

Hanging out with Maddie shows Noah a different side of Jake–one that was deeply human and surprisingly douche-free. And the more he tries to solve the mystery of the ring and of Jake, the more Noah starts to discover about himself and of love.

Speaker: Dr Lisa Nakamura, University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign

Games are a radically transnational medium: as Martin Lister writes in New Media: An Introduction, ‘even before Pokemon, the videogame was perhaps the most thoroughly transnational form of popular culture, both as an industry (with Sony, Sega and Nintendo as the key players) but also at the level of content – the characters and narratives of many videogames are evidence of relays of influence between America and Japan.’

Internet gameplay is becoming more socially and culturally diverse and ubiquitous than ever before. Yet at the same time, the culture of griefing or pranking that dominates these games and other forms of networked social life such as Second Life and Chatroulette takes increasingly racist and racialized forms. The Patriotic Niggas, a group of griefers who delight in ‘breaking’ Second Life and Habbo Hotel by filling public space with garbage, are assuredly not African American, but resort to offensive racist languages as the shortest route to their goal: the disruption of online community and social life.

This talk recaps the history of racist griefing online and link the current crisis in racial discourse in the US with this practice, exploring the implications for digital games as a transnational public sphere.
