The Biden administration on Wednesday extended the COVID-19 public health emergency near its April 16 expiration date, offering an extension of its pandemic policy and flexibility for the healthcare industry.
Health and Human Services Minister Xavier Becerra extended the state of emergency by 90 days, extending it until mid-July. Becerra had previously pledged at least 60 days’ notice before the end of the state of emergency, first declared in January 2020 under Donald Trump’s administration.
The emergency has increased access to Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program health insurance for 13 to 16 million Americans, expanded access to telemedicine services, made it easier to obtain health insurance, and allowed authorities to quickly track approvals for COVID-19 treatments , testing and vaccines at the Food and Drug Administration, among other flexibility.
Republicans have called on the Biden administration to ease the state of emergency if life returns to normal and the virus continues to spread.
“Americans, especially children, are in crisis. Rather than keep us in a permanent state of emergency, it is time for this administration to put the people first and stop clinging to the power you currently hold.” Claiming more than 70 House Republicans wrote in a February letter to Presidents Joe Biden and Becerra, urging the government to extend the state of emergency through May 15.
