Multi-read content what are the border states of texas

Texas1836map

The Republic of Texas was an independent country bordering the United States and Mexico and existed from April 21, 1836 to February 19, 1846. The new republic was formed after Mexico’s defeat in the Civil War, the Texas Revolution, and claimed borders that included an area that included all of what is now Texas, as well as portions of what is now New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming.

The northern and western borders of the Republic of Texas were very different from present-day Texas and included the following areas. From the mouth of the Sabine River north to the 32nd parallel, then by crossing the Red River, west to the 100th meridian, north to the Arkansas River and present-day Dodge, Kansas, and then west to the headwaters of the Arkansas River near the date of present-day Leadville, Colorado and then north of the 42nd parallel, near present-day Rawlins, Wyoming. From Silverton, Colorado, the western and southern borders then follow the course of the Rio Grande.

The borders of the Republic of Texas would therefore include many of the regions known today. Las Cruces, Albuquerque and Taos, New Mexico would lie near the western border of the former Republic of Texas. Santa Fe, New Mexico and Alamosa, Colorado will also be part of the Republic of Texas. Rawlings, Wyoming is part of the northern border. Kremmling, Vail and Salida, Colorado would be as close to the eastern portion of the boundary as portions of Cañon City and Pueblo, Colorado. Additionally, La Junta and Lamar, Colorado, along with the cities of Garden City and Dodge City, Kansas, are near the border. In addition, there is the Oklahoma “pan-handle” strip, which is contained within the former Republic of Texas.

How the border of the Republic of Texas was formed

East/North border

Texas’ east-north boundary was established by the 1819 Treaty of Adams-Onís between the United States and Spain. According to this treaty, the boundary extended from the mouth of the Sabine River north to the 32nd parallel, then at the Red River, west to the 100th meridian, then north to the Arkansas River and present-day Dodge, Kansas. to the headwaters of the Arkansas River near present-day Leadville, Colorado, and finally north to the 42nd parallel near present-day Rawlins, Wyoming.

South/West border

On May 14, 1836, the defeated President of Mexico, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, signed the Treaty of Velasco. This treaty established the Republic of Texas as an independent nation, and Santa Anna committed to withdrawing troops south of the Rio Grande. Establishing the Rio Grande as the southern boundary would begin the boundary at the Western Continental Divide, 10 miles east of present-day Silverton, Colorado, and follow the course of the river as it flows south through the Date Zone, now New Mexico and Texas and finally the Gulf of Mexico. Its total length is about 1,896 miles.

However, the treaty was never ratified by the Mexican government and Mexico continued to use the Nueces River as its border. The dispute remained unresolved until 1848, when the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed by Mexico and the United States. This treaty ended the Mexican War and established the border between Mexico and Texas.

The borders of today’s TexasTexas

The smaller form of modern-day Texas was defined by the Compromise of 1850, in which Texas relinquished its claim to much of the West in exchange for transferring its crushing national debt to the United States. This debt/land swap resulted in the current state of Texas.
