Multi-read content 4 part harmony christmas song

If your choir, choir, or other group has never sung a Christmas carol, you absolutely must. Our church choir has been doing this for a few years now and I cannot put into words how rewarding, absolutely amazing it feels to go out and do that once a year. We have arranged about 4 or 5 places to visit once a year and have already planned our visit. (By the way, it is very important that you call ahead and ask permission of the places you want to visit first.)

We just got on and followed each other from place to place, visiting nursing homes and other pre-arranged places. If your kit has a bus or minivan, that would be even better. But I can’t tell you how it feels to see everyone’s faces at Wal-Mart when we start singing and the sound begins to travel through the store. Or the smiles on the faces of the nursing home residents when we finished singing and started talking to them and visiting them. We often have trouble leaving a certain place because people keep asking us to come to their area or department and sing.

I think one of the main reasons people are so touched by it is that we’re actually singing songs that they can sing well a cappella themselves. Nursing homes are actually full of people singing, as you can imagine. But both residents and staff told us how much better we heard than most people have ever experienced. Secret? I have carefully selected the songs we sing each year to ensure they are songs that truly sound a cappella. Then we just learned pretty basic 3-part harmonies and really practiced for our Christmas trip. I note what keys we play in each song, and then use a simple pitch pipeline to place us in the appropriate key.

The mistake many groups make when it comes to singing is that they only pick Christmas carols from their Sunday morning playlists, or songs written to be sung. These songs are written around heavy musical arrangements, so often they don’t convey well enough to be sung a cappella.

What’s even worse about singing a cappella are large rooms where nothing really happens except clapping and stomping, which is where the music usually plays. So the key to getting Christmas carols that sound really good is to choose standard Christmas carols that have constant lyrical movement and no dead space or lead requirements. With minimal effort I was able to find a handful of these and easily create a simple three part harmonic arrangement from them.

Here are my top 5 Christmas carols that sound great a cappella.

1. Joy in the world

2. Oh, come all you faithful ones

3. Listen to the Harold Angels sing

4. The angels we heard above

5. God rest, ye merry lords

Well, here’s how to praise these songs and sound so good they’ll want you to come back year after year. In any case, the first 3 tips must be carried out by the musician and/or the department head/head.

1. Assign keys to each song.

Keep these keys as close together as a vocal arrangement will allow. This way you can easily and quickly identify the key using the voice tube or even the mini piano app on your I-Phone.

2. Create a simple 3 part mix for each song, soprano and tenor.

Do SATB if you have that. Writing arrangements should be as simple as taking the famous melody line from any song, assigning it to a soprano or alto, and then writing a harmony around it. We just use the SAT every year and it looks good to rave about.

3. Schedule a practice session to learn harmony.

The entire practice session should be done a cappella using just a voice tube or your piano app to supply the keys.

4. Use lyrics!

This is a perfectly acceptable and even expected time for a choir or group to sing along with lyrical music in front of them. It makes things a lot easier to perfect and actually looks more like Christmas lol. One of our admins used to put our lyrics sheets in nice red or green binders so it looked nice when we stood and sang.

5. Coordinate your colors.

Looking good outside is never a problem, and when you’re all wearing similar colors it’s easy to identify you as a team. Usually we only wear red shirts and denim pants.

If you can put that together this year – even just 3 songs – try to sing Christmas carols this year. This is an annual event for our church choir. Attendance is not “required” so we typically have a small group of 10 or fewer. But with the right songs and just three basic harmonies, it really made an impact year after year. You really don’t understand the true meaning of music ministry until you take it over the wall and do something like that. It’s a great feeling and once you do it you’ll be addicted.
