We burned down the street for 35 yearsBy Bruce Springsteenmost complex case. The title track and album’s emotional focus catapulted The Boss to a superstardom few rock stars have ever seen, “Born In The U.S.A.” is still as captivating and elusive as ever, pulling listeners in with a combination of vibrant music and flowing lyrics in seemingly opposite directions.
Even after so much time has passed since its release, the song is still a difficult song to explain. Shall we focus on her poignant lyrics and narratives about how the US treated Vietnam veterans upon returning from the war? Or should the music carry the load and make us put our hands on our hearts and say hello to Old Glory?
To understand the answer, it helps to look back at the somewhat complicated story behind the song’s composition, recording, and release. In early 1982, Springsteen settled into his New Jersey home studio with an acoustic guitar and a four-track recorder to demonstrate a slew of songs, including “Born In The U.S.A,” that he could record a future album with for the E Street Band when he died Band assembled to attempt to record electrified versions of the haunting demos, Springsteen realized the original had captured them better than the confusing nature of the lyrics. As a result, these demos were released as the Nebraska album, which would receive universal acclaim for its uncompromising, outspoken reflections on life in America.
“For me it was a death song. Apparently the lyrics and the music don’t go together. – Jon Landau
“Born In The U.S.A.” was removed from the album Nebraska because Springsteen and his manager Jon Landau felt it did not fit the album. In fact, Landau didn’t think much of the song at all, which is why he was surprised when Springsteen demanded that the song be treated as a session for the next album. His successor was chosen in the spring of ’82.
Landau told Springsteen biographer Dave Marsh. “It was one of the inferior songs on the Nebraska tape. Apparently the lyrics and the music don’t go together. “
But Springsteen had a vision for the song, which the band realized in a magical studio. The riff on Roy Bittan’s synth is like a rocket launcher, constantly blasting the song skyward, while Max Weinberg’s drumming, particularly the improvisations, is frantic, which he flaunts in the passage interrupting the instrument, is pure adrenaline.
In contrast to the hidden murmur of the acoustic version (found on the 1998 Bruce’s compilation), Springsteen’s vocals are screamed with ruthless defiance on the electric track. He plays a Vietnam veteran who, in succinct, effective language, tells a life story that begins with a harrowing childhood, progresses through a troubled youth, and joins a family at war.
Any hope that a grateful nation would change his fortunes upon his return was dashed when he was met with stereotypes (“Son, if it were me”) and patronizing attitudes (“Son, now you don’t get it “) By people at Veterans Affairs. This betrayal was all the more bitter as he viewed his war effort and the enormity of what he had lost as futile: “There was a brother in Khe Sahn who fought the Viet Cong / They stayed there. Well, he’s already gone. “
All of this evidence seems to classify Born in the United States as a pure protest document. However, when the song was released in 1984 (and eventually charted in the US Top 10 as a single), conservative pundit George Will jumped into the chorus and praised the songs. Springsteen’s values eventually led President Ronald Reagan and then ran for re-election. to thank Springsteen in a campaign speech.
Bruce will denounce this political opportunism with concert speeches that make it clear that his political views are in no way befitting the President. But the question remains whether people can be blamed for being carried away by the emotions of music and the feelings of patriotism. It’s not for nothing that “Born in America” has long been an integral part of the fireworks display on July 4th.
Those who say Springsteen is trying to bring down are also probably missing the point, as he doesn’t try to dodge those harsh reprimands; he belts them out as loud as when he’s singing the chorus. The song inspires neither patriotism nor blind loyalty and acceptance of everything the government does.
Being a patriot, Bruce Springsteen suggests with the song’s tireless story, requires devotion to the standards by which the country was founded. If we fail in this regard as a nation, anyone listening to the loud choruses of “Born In The U.S.A.” must do so with sarcastic disgust rather than pride.
