In October, Jason and I saw an ad for Empty Faces, a mystical series story pack. The basic premise is as follows: for the duration of the story, every month you will receive a box of clues that you will find to solve the puzzle. Empty Faces is made by the same company that released a mystery thriller series, Hunt a Killer, but this one seems to be more what Jason and I like. We decided to pre-purchase the first five-month episode of The Woods. We’ve received two installments now and I thought I’d do a quick check.

November – January
In this pack we receive a letter of recommendation from a fictional character asking for help. I won’t go into detail about it, I won’t reveal it! The rest of the pack includes several journal entries, a doctor’s note, some pages with different codes, a necklace with a pendant, a notepad on the box, and a bundle of sage (an item number in the image below). What we expected: find a whole bunch of codes and clues to try and solve the puzzle we’re asking for your help with. What we really have: Sure, codes and clues to decipher, but instead of solving the mystery, they’re the beginning of the story.

Most of the time, our reaction to the first pack is, “Wait – is that all???” One of those codes that’s really easy to do, as long as you know what you’re looking at. (It’s a piece of real code and we thought it would be easy to spot, but looking at the spoilers after we’ve worked it out turns out that this is more difficult for most people because the code is unsolvable, if you don’t recognize it.) The second code has a shortcut to get you started and then it becomes pretty easy to convert. Reminds me of those middle school rides where you had to crack simple codes and graphics. There’s also a URL for a blog for fun reading, including some password-protected posts. We could only figure out one of the passwords, but we felt that was all we had to do in the first pack.

All in all it’s an interesting concept, although we’ll definitely be working harder and having more clues to build on the theory. We’re keeping the pack and hoping part two grows on top of it and maybe gives us a little more puzzles to solve.

December – February
Our second pack includes another letter, more journal entries, another medical letter, more codes (some the same, some different), a spooky photo, quotes from a paragraph book, a heavy prism, and lots of fluff. (Some items are pictured below.) Our expectations were a little lower this time and we picked up the box a few days ago thinking we’d be covering it in under an hour. Oh no.

It turned out that the first box was just a sample dish. This second box contains not only puzzles that have no codes to solve, but also codes that do not have a primer or seed code that we must decode from scratch and codes that ask us to search for a seed. . When we finally got the password for one of the protected blog posts, it resulted in another password with even more difficult codes. There’s a lot we haven’t heard of that we need to look for, thereby making new connections that might be important later in the story. We’ve spent hours with this pack for several days and we’re still not sure if we found everything we were looking for. There were also many very scary moments that made me wonder about everything, including two that gave me goosebumps right away.
