Franklin Roosevelt and the Crown Princess Martha: Friendship Forged in War
TV miniseriesAcross the Atlanticpresents a surprising and little-known story to an American audience. But what percentage should we read about FDR and Martha’s relationship? And what is the true nature of their relationship? David B. Woolner, senior research fellow at the Roosevelt Institute and author ofThe Last 100 Days: FDR in War and Peaceevokes a deep friendship in times of war.
When war broke out in Europe in the spring of 1939, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) developed a strategy that he believed would simultaneously strengthen ties with Western democracies, abolished America’s isolationist attitude, and began to Convince Congress to relax prohibition on neutrality law United States. Support allies in times of war. FDR used the timely pretext of the 1939 New York World’s Fair to extend invitations not only to Crown Prince Olav of Norway and his wife Martha, but also to the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark and most importantly to King George VI Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain. Kingdom – the first time the reigning King of England has ever visited the shores of America.

Roosevelt’s goal was to show Americans what he called the “basic democracy” of his royal guests. To that end, he minimized the clutter of Washington’s official events and invited his guests to spend time with him at his home in Hyde Park, New York. (The highlight of each visit is an intimate picnic lunch of American sausage!)
The timing of the visits is also not random; they coincided with a concerted effort by the Roosevelt administration to ask Congress to relax existing neutrality laws and give Roosevelt the power to supply other countries with US arms on a cash-and-carry basis. Such an action would allow Roosevelt to support Britain and France should war break out without direct American involvement in the fighting. Roosevelt, who never misses a political opportunity, expects the “simplification and spontaneity” of the royal visits not only to demonstrate US support for the European regimes threatened by Hitler, but also to gain greater American public support for lifting the arms embargo will .
In the midst of all this intrigue, Prince Olav and Princess Martha took the President and Mrs. Roosevelt to Hyde Park for the weekend. Evidently, Roosevelt had taken a liking to the pair, particularly Martha, whose light, graceful, and majestic appearance he found particularly appealing. The weekend the royals spent in Hyde Park marked the beginning of a warm friendship between the President and Princess that will last for the next six years.
As described inAcross the AtlanticPresident Roosevelt was directly involved in bringing Martha and her children to the United States for asylum, hosting them in the White House for a time, and helping them find housing nearby. Roosevelt visited the princess more than 100 times during the war. Not displayed inAcross the AtlanticMany of these visits were attended by Prince Olav and others. However, it seems that this devotion to Martha has led some observers to wonder if there is some sort of romantic bond between the two.

Without a doubt, FDR was attracted to Martha and enjoyed her company. But we shouldn’t read too much into their friendship. First, because the President obviously enjoys being in the company of royalty. The diaries of his activities in both Washington and Hyde Park document the many times Roosevelt hosted European heads of state. This royal inclination has led not only to FDR’s close relationship with Princess Martha – whom he calls “his child” – but also to the equally close relationship he has developed with the Dutch royal family. Fairly proud of his own Dutch ancestry, the President let Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands know that he would happily grant Princess Juliana and her children asylum in Hyde Park or Washington, where he and Eleanor would look after them “as if they were part.” our family. “
Princess Juliana and her children eventually settled in Ottawa, Canada, for the duration of the war – close enough to Hyde Park that they also spent much time in Roosevelt. As with Princess Martha, Roosevelt developed a cordial relationship with the Dutch princess, whom he called “your old uncle.” Roosevelt also agreed to be godfather to Juliana’s fourth daughter, Princess Margriet, who was born in Ottawa in January 1943.
However, Princess Martha’s proximity to the White House allows the President to see her far more often than Juliana and her family. Martha also has a personality that suits FDRs very well. As Roosevelt’s distant cousin Margaret “Daisy” Suckley noted in her journal, Martha was “very affectionate
It’s a well-known fact that since childhood, FDR rarely confided his innermost thoughts to his family, friends, or advisor. This stoicism was even more evident when Roosevelt contracted polio at age 39, which left him unable to walk or stand unaided. By the time Roosevelt became president, his relationship with Eleanor had also evolved into a political partnership rather than a traditional marriage. For a person in his condition, who also took on the responsibilities of high office, emotional inaccessibility had its perks. But it can also lead to feelings of isolation and worse, loneliness, even for someone surrounded by a large family and dozens of assistants.
We must examine this private side of the Roosevelt character if we are to understand the nature of his relationship with Princess Martha. Because there are very few people in FDR’s life with whom he can relax and be himself, and even fewer with whom he will share his intimate feelings. Martha is surrounded by people the President likes to hang out with—people whose relationships with him aren’t based purely on politics or business.

Seen from this perspective, the arrival of Martha and her children at the start of World War II proved to be a boon for Roosevelt. Their visits together—whether to the White House, Hyde Park, or her estate at Pook’s Hill in Bethesda, Maryland—gained Roosevelt a much-needed respite from the war. However, we must remember that there have been other individuals who have fallen into this category. It was common for FDR to also host foreign dignitaries, for whom he enjoyed nothing more than escaping the confines of the office by driving in the country — the equivalent of a stroll — or engaging in pre-dinner conversation over a cocktail involved. , in what the President calls “the hour of the children.” Foreign guests are regularly invited to the White House to celebrate Christmas, FDR’s birthday and Franklin and Eleanor’s wedding anniversaries, although it must be said that Princess Martha and her husband Olav attended these occasions more than any other foreign visitor.
There’s a more serious side to the President’s relationship with Princess Martha, too. As in the case of Princess Juliana, it is likely that Roosevelt provided Martha with information about the course of the war. As with Juliana, Roosevelt also encouraged Prince Martha to tour the Scandinavian regions of the United States to “preserve the names of nations constantly occupied by our public.” Roosevelt corresponded with King Haakon VII and was in regular contact with Olav, either by letter or in person during the Crown Prince’s many wartime visits to America – some of which lasted three to four months.
During these contacts, issues of particular interest to Norway are often raised by the President. However, because Norway was a relatively small part of a much larger coalition, Roosevelt was not always able to work with them or provide the ships and/or war supplies requested.Across the Atlanticcited Roosevelt’s reluctance and/or inability to sell arms to Norway under US neutrality law. But by the time Princess Martha arrived in the United States, Congress had given the President authority to sell guns to shrinking nations on a cash-and-carry basis. ThatrealityRoosevelt’s reluctance to provide Norway with major material support stemmed from the simple fact that building up US forces and keeping Britain in the war were top priorities. And while the passage of the Financial Leasing Act of 1941 greatly expanded FDR’s ability to provide aid to countries like Norway, American support was favored for Britain, China and especially Russia.

Eventually, as the war intensified, the United States would arm Norwegian merchant ships, train their gun crews, repair their ships, and take other measures to help. But despite FDR’s close ties to Martha and the Norwegian royal family, American support for the Norwegian war effort remained relatively thin. However, there is no doubt that FDR not only has a lot of affection for Martha, Olav and their children, but also for the people of Norway. Perhaps the best example of this empathy was the speech FDR gave in 1942 when he delivered a 173-foot naval patrol boat to Norway (via Lend-Lease); a present for King Haakon’s 70th birthday.
FDR spoke with great determination and said:
If anyone is wondering why this war broke out, let them go to Norway. If anyone is under the illusion that this war could have been prevented, look to Norway. And if anyone has doubts about the will of democracy, I say again, they should look to Norway.
FDR then presented the ship, named after King Haakon VII, to Princess Martha as a “symbol of the admiration and friendship of the American people.” He then closed the door, hoping that the day would soon come “when she will carry the Norwegian flag to a home port in a free Norway!”
Unfortunately, President Roosevelt will not live to see that day. He died of a massive brain hemorrhage on April 12, 1945 in Warm Springs, Georgia – less than three weeks after leaving Washington for a well-deserved rest. Before leaving, FDR will enjoy a final dinner at the White House attended by his wife Eleanor and Princess Martha and her husband.
