Characteristics of the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean isLargest inland sea in the world.

Its surface is 2,499,350 km.2, the length is 3,860 km, the widest point 1,610 km, the deepest point 4,405 m.

Surrounded by Asia, Africa and Europe, the Mediterranean Sea is connected to the Atlantic through the Strait of Gibraltar, to the Black Sea through the Sea of Marmara and the Straits, and to the Red Sea through the Suez Canal.

The seas that border the Mediterranean Sea are the Tyrrhenian, Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean Seas.

The 140 km width between Sicily and Cape Bon in Tunisia divides the Mediterranean Sea into east and west. The salinity is very high compared to the Atlantic. Tidal events show very small changes.

The island is often mountainous, often seen earthquakes and volcanoes. Hot, dry sirocco winds can be seen from the south, cold, dry, foggy and local bora winds from the north.

Mediterranean geology

mediterranean sea shore

During the Triassic period (about 200 million years ago), the Earth’s landmass was split into two roughly equal landmasses: Laurasia to the north, Gondwana to the south.

As the Laurasia and Gondwana massifs formed and disintegrated, these two main lands were filled by the Tethyan Sea. The Tethyan Sea, the source of the Mediterranean Sea, stretched uninterrupted along what is now the Mediterranean Sea, the Middle East, the Persian Gulf, and the Indian Ocean.

The final shape of what is now the Mediterranean Sea was shaped by northerly pressures beginning in the late Cretaceous (about 65 million years ago) and continuing until the late Miocene (13 million years ago). This mass also formed the sweeping mountain ranges that surround the Mediterranean Sea today, compressing, bending, and swelling the sediments of the Tethyan Sea.

Hydrology of the Mediterranean

Mediterranean sea

The hydrological regime and water structure of the Mediterranean Sea are influenced by the high evaporation rate of the high temperature basin.

The only connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic is the narrow Strait of Gibraltar. 97.1% of the water structure reaching the Mediterranean Sea is provided by this link, the rest being formed by precipitation (1.8%), water runoff from the Black Sea (0.7%) and water flow.

The pattern of water loss in the Mediterranean is 93.3% through the Strait of Gibraltar, 6.4% through evaporation and 0.3% through water entering the Black Sea. The rate of water loss through evaporation is higher than the rate of precipitation, which is the main reason for the high salinity.

The temperature fluctuations in the Mediterranean are reflected in the water. Winter surface water temperature in the western basin 12°C-14°C, in the eastern basin 14°C-17°C; Temperatures in the summer months range between 22°C-25°C in the west and 25°C-28°C in the east.

Flora, natural life and natural resources

Mediterranean Map/List of Mediterranean Countries 1

The Mediterranean climate is cool, rainy in winter, warm and dry in summer, revealing incredible vegetation. The main vegetation in the driest parts of the basin was formed by postglacial forests that have left their place in the shrubby vegetation. This species-rich vegetation is adapted to the hot and dry summer months with thin leaves that reduce transpiration. Large, area-specific tree species are conifers, olive trees and oaks.

The majority of the Atlantic fish and shellfish communities live in the Mediterranean Sea. Bottom-dwelling fish species include barnacles, shieldfish, tonguefish, flagfish, and bettas. predatory fish; Rays, Sharks, Swordfish, Snakefish.

In the river deltas, mullet, anchovies, anchovies, mackerel can be seen. In various aquifers, acorns, clams, lobsters, hermit crabs and shrimp are the main living species. However, in recent years, uncontrolled hunting, trawling, the throwing of explosives and increasingly serious pollution have caused serious damage to human life.

There are oil fields in Italy (Sicily), Egypt, Spain, off the coast of Tunisia, natural gas fields in the Adriatic Sea.

Mediterranean history

The Mediterranean coast has been the center of various and powerful civilizations since ancient times. The Romans, Greeks, Sicilians and Carthaginians followed in the footsteps of the Phoenicians, who were the first to open their trade and shipping routes. To maintain economic superiority, patrol of the Mediterranean was inevitable.

During the Roman Empire, the Mediterranean Sea was a Roman lake; then the Byzantines, Arabs, Vandals and Goths took advantage of the occupation of North Africa and Italy and started the war for supremacy. One reaction was the Crusades against the Arabs, which reached Spain via Africa in the 7th century. During the Ottoman Empire, the Turks ruled the Mediterranean by dealing with the powerful fleets of the era such as Spain, Italy, France, Venice and Malta.

At the end of the 16th century, the British invaded the area, who benefited from destroying each other in order to gain the upper hand over the Mediterranean states. The Suez Canal, opened in 1869, increased the economic importance of the Mediterranean, connecting Europe with South Asia and the Far East. By the end of World War I, Britain was no longer the world’s greatest power. During World War II, the Germans attempted to conquer the Mediterranean.

Technological development in the Mediterranean, as in many parts of the world, is threatened by heavy pollution resulting from many accidents, industrial waste and unmanned ships controlling the transport of crude oil and chemical products. Several studies have been carried out on this subject and countries with Mediterranean coasts are taking joint action.
