Multi-read content what comes first thunder or lightning

Richard Hurd / CC BY 2.0

Although it’s theoretically possible to hear thunder and then see lightning, lightning actually causes thunder, so it must come first.Lightning is a sound made by the sound of rapidly expanding air being suddenly heated by a lightning strike.

Lightning is extremely hot and can reach temperatures of up to 54,000 degrees Fahrenheit. When lightning strikes the air, there is a large temperature difference and therefore the air around the lightning quickly heats up. The heat basically explodes the air because it’s expanding so quickly, making the cracking sound that makes a thunder wave. The rumbling sound that followed the crack was the result of vibrations in the air column.

The speed of light travels much faster than the speed of sound, so people should see lightning before they see thunder. If someone hears a clap of thunder before seeing lightning, the thunder they hear is the result of another lightning bolt that the person was unaware of. Since lightning occurs before thunder, lightning immediately followed by thunder is a good indicator that a storm is fairly close.
