Multi-read content why are elephants afraid of mice

Why are elephants believed to be afraid of rats? Some say that’s because the image is a common sight in cartoons and other media. Usually the viewer sees a large and powerful elephant crouching in the corner while a rat roams about. It’s a hilarious image, a thousand-pound animal terrified of a tiny mouse – but is it possible? Some elephant experts have debunked this myth, and it appears that elephants are actually afraid of rats.

Where does the myth of the elephant fearing the rat come from?

Sources have traced this myth back to around AD 77 and ancient Greek folklore. According to a local fable, a mouse once climbed into an elephant’s trunk and “made him mad”. At first glance, an elephant seems afraid of a mouse because it might fit in its trunk. But just because it fits doesn’t mean it actually happens. Is the thought of a rat climbing into his body enough to make an elephant fear a rat?

Some people thought so. Later (in the 1600s) a doctor in Ireland concluded that elephants were concerned that rats would climb their trunks and practically suffocate them. Of course, his hypothesis was wrong not only because of the anthropic theory. He believes the reason elephants are “fearful” is because they lack the necessary little cap that humans can use to help the rat reach the elephant’s windpipe after it climbs onto its trunk . Although proven wrong, the myth that elephants are afraid of rats is still widely believed and used to poke fun at them.

Are Elephants Really Afraid of Mice?

Yes, elephants are afraid of rats, but certainly not because they can crawl on their bodies. If a rat does it, its trunk is strong enough to blow the rats away in no time.

Actually, it’s because they’re a mammal. Most mammals have brains programmed to recoil or be frightened by charging creatures. Elephants, no matter how big, are startled by things that move as fast as mice. According to elephant behavior experts, they fear anything that moves around their legs, regardless of their size.

Elephants are not alone in their fear of rats and other rodents like creepers. Most animals will jump back or appear startled when they do something they don’t expect. Just like humans, an elephant can get scared if a rat walks right next to it, but so can any other animal. Animals usually startle in the presence of other animals unless they are watching them or already know they are there. Humans do this too. After seeing evidence of a rat, people are less likely to be startled when they see them walking around.

But even knowing that rats are not a threat, people are often frightened by them. The same goes for elephants. So it is true that elephants are afraid of mice just like any other animal is afraid of mice, even other rats.

Video Script:

Elephants are the earth’s largest land animal. They easily scare most creatures who come across their path because they’re big, strong, and very protective of one another. But we’re to believe that when they encounter a helpless little mouse, they’re shaken with fear, panic fills the whole herd, and they run far and fast deep into the forest? All because of a tiny little mouse? Let’s examine whether this long-held belief is true or misconstrued fact.

No one seems to know where this legendary phobia that an elephant has toward mice originated from exactly. Many researchers trace a possible source to ancient Greek time folklore around 77 AD, which claims that a mouse somehow went up the nostrils of an elephant’s trunk and made it go berserk. However, this tale lacks realism. Just because a mouse would fit into the nostril hole doesn’t mean it actually would happen. Or that it explains the possible long-term generational fear of mice. Not to mention that an elephant’s nostril is very sensitive, and its sense of smell is four times that of a bloodhound. An elephant can smell water several miles away, primarily because millions of receptors cells are in its upper nasal cavity.

In the 1600 hundreds, an Irish physician named Allen Moulin came up with a further investigation that concluded that an elephant was fearful of a mouse because it would suffocate if it climbed up its nostril. The reasoning behind this claim is that an elephant cannot breathe through its mouth and would suffocate if a mouse blocked the only air passage to the lung. Today’s modern science debunked the physician theory, and we know for a fact that an elephant can breathe through its mouth just like we do.

So, what would happen if a mouse was brave enough to climb up an elephant’s trunk? The answer is simple! It would simply blow the little mouse out with a quick puff of air.

But back to the main question, is an elephant scared of a mouse? Not exactly. You see, elephants, like many mammals, get startled when a fast-moving animal shoots by them unexpectedly. According to Josh Plotnik, a researcher of elephant behavior and intelligence at the University of Cambridge in England said “In the wild, anything that suddenly runs or slithers by an elephant can spook it. It doesn’t have to be a mouse—dogs, cats, snakes, or any animal that makes a sudden movement by an elephant’s feet can startle it.” In addition, elephants are known to have poor eyesight, which might be another possibility that makes them surprised when a tiny mouse shoots by them, not knowing what went by their feet.
