One of the most subversive films Alfred Hitchcock ever made was an amazing little masterpiece calledThe shadow of a doubtwas revived in 1943 in the middle of World War II. It is somewhat surprising, some would even say remarkable, that Hollywood has produced a film like this at this point in history, as it depicts a typical small American town polished on the surface, seemingly full of innocent, kind people, a of those ideal communities where everyone knows each other’s names, unexpectedly brings apple pie, and smiles softly and warmly before Sunday mass outside church. But beneath that glassy surface, a psychotic serial killer roams the streets, frequenting their dinner parties and sleeping in their rooms. To make matters worse, a murderer’s teenage niece becomes suspicious of her uncle’s activities but keeps her insights, however dark, to herself in order to save her family from destruction.

As many have noted, there are some elements of the plot that, to a deep perception, seem incredible, drawn out, and unconvincing. It is to Hitchcock’s great credit that these objections are considered unimportant, because when you watch the film, immersed in the story and paralyzed by its suspense, you may not notice or care about these trifles.The shadow of a doubtwritten by no fewer than six people, four of whom were credited with writing the screenplay. That’s right, psychologists too! In a way, it revealed a weakness. On the one hand I claim to refute the justifications, on the other hand I worry about them. After all, I’m only human! But this impression is also due to my happy memories of working with Thornton Wilder. In the UK I’ve always had the collaboration of top stars and the best writers, but in America things are very different. I’ve been rejected by many stars and writers who despised the film genre I work in. So I’m so happy to hear that one of America’s leading playwrights is willing to work with me and that he actually takes the whole thing very seriously.
Did you choose Thornton Wilder or did someone suggest him?
I want him. Let’s go back a little to the history of painting. A woman named Margaret MacDonell, head of Selznick’s story department, was married to a novelist. One day she told me that her husband had an idea for a story but he hadn’t written it down yet. So we went to Brown Derby for lunch and they told me the story we told together while we ate. Then I told him to go home and type it up. That’s how we incorporated the storyline into a nine-page draft that was sent to Thornton Wilder. He came right here, in the studio where we are, to work on it. We worked together in the mornings and he worked alone in the afternoons, handwriting in his notebook. He never works continuously but jumps from scene to scene at will. I would like to add that I wanted Wilder because he wrote a great play called Private Town.

I watched the screen version of this play by Sam Wood.
Once the script was completed, Wilder joined the US Army’s Psychological Warfare Branch. But I felt like there was something missing in our script, and I wanted someone who could add a few humorous touches to contrast the film. Thornton Wilder recommended an M-G-M writer, Robert Audrey, but he seemed inclined to serious drama, so Sally Benson was invited. Before writing, Wilder and I worked hard to bring the city, the people and the decoration to life. We choose a city and look for the right house there. We found one, but Wilder thought it was too big for a banker. Upon investigation, it turned out that the man who lived there had the same budget as our character, so Wilder agreed to use it. But when we came back two weeks before shooting, the owner was so pleased that his house would look like a painting, so he repainted the whole thing. So we had to go in and ask his permission to paint it dirty again. And of course when we were done we redesigned everything with new bright colors.
Thornton Wilder’s main-credit admission in the Shadow of a Doubt is rather unusual.

I was confused by a detail of the picture. In the first scene at the station, when the train with Uncle Charlie is approaching, a thick cloud of black smoke comes out of the locomotive’s chimney, and as the train approaches, the whole station goes dark. I have a feeling this was done on purpose because when the train left the station there was only a small puff of smoke at the end of the photo.
Is correct; I requested lots of black smoke for the first scene. It’s one of those ideas that you have a lot of trouble with, even though it rarely gets noticed. But here we were lucky. The position of the sun cast a beautiful shadow over the entire station.

I agree. There is a similar detail in The Birds when Jessica Tandy drives away in her car in shock after discovering the farmer’s body. To keep that feeling going, I had them suck the smoke into the truck’s exhaust, and we dusted the road, too. It also added to the contrast to the peaceful mood when she arrived at the farm. For this scene we wet the road slightly and there was no smoke coming out of the truck.
With the exception of the detective, the cast is excellent and I imagine you will be very pleased with the performances of Joseph Cotten and Teresa Wright. Her portrait of a young American girl is striking; She has a pretty face, a beautiful figure and her way of walking is particularly graceful.

The series briefly references much of his early work in the UK, focusing primarily on American classics such asThe shadow of a doubt,Notorious,rear window,Dizzy,mentallyandThe birds. The documentary also covers his television years, examining Hitchcock’s defining traits, from his inevitable brief guest appearances to his famous “MacGuffin.” Kevin Spacey narrates and provides interviews with his beautiful daughter Pat, as well as film directors such as Brian De Palma, Jonathan Demme, Curtis Hanson, Robert Altman, Ronald Neame and Peter Bogdanovich, along with cast, crewmember and crewmember Tippi Hedren, Joseph Stefano, Norman Lloyd, Robert F Boyle, Teresa Wright and Janet Leigh. This documentary has not been officially released on DVD.
