The ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’ is an unofficial title given to many places, monuments, places and even people! These are considered on par with the Seven Wonders of the World.

Here is a list of 10 things called ‘Eighth Wonders of the World’

1) Sigiriya, Sri Lanka- Eighth Wonder of the World

Sinhalese Dynasty King Kashyapa I built this impressive stone fort in the 5th century. According to the Culamsa chronicles, King Kashyapa was the son of King Dhatusena. Kashyapa then killed his father and usurped his brother, the legitimate heir to the throne. His brother later fled to India, where Kashyapa built a fort to protect himself from any retaliation. During his reign, the magnificent fortress of Sigiriya was the capital of the kingdom. Sigiriya basically means “Lion Rock”.

Used as a Buddhist Monastery until the 14th century after the death of the king, it is known that the castle was later swallowed up by the surrounding forests and used only by local villagers. The British rediscovered it in the 1800s and were impressed by its craftsmanship and colorful frescoes. It was later declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many today consider this stunning site the eighth wonder of the world.

2) Terracotta Army, China

An impressive honorary art form, the Terracotta Army is a sight to behold. These terracotta structures were built to accompany the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, to the afterlife. The numbers date back to at least the 3rd century BC, when it was accidentally discovered by local farmers while digging a water well in Lintong county in 1974.

According to historian Sima Thien, the construction of the shrine began with Emperor Qin’s accession to the throne at the age of 13. Also, more than 700,000 conscripted workers were required to build this shrine. The terracotta figures are life-size and have distinctive facial and physical features. Terracotta horses and chariots accompany these figures. This wonder of art is known as the eighth wonder of the world.

3) Niagara Falls, Canada

Now, who hasn’t heard of the famous Niagara Falls? Niagara Falls, located between the Ontario region of Canada and New York, USA, consists of 3 waterfalls. The largest waterfall is Horseshoe Falls. The formation of these majestic waterfalls took place about 12,000 years ago. During the last ice age, large streams of water were released from the melting glaciers and flowed into the Niagara River.

In addition, the waterfalls were a major source of hydroelectricity and are the largest source of electricity in New York today. Falls are also associated with many ‘hazards’ performing public tricks on falls. A famous example is Annie Edson Taylor, who fell in a ballot box, survived, but famously said that no one should ever do that again. Today, the majestic Niagara Falls is considered the eighth natural wonder of the world.

4) Banaue Rice Fields, Philippines

Often referred to as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’, these impressive rice terraces were built over 2000 years ago by the Ifugao tribe of the Philippines. An elaborate irrigation system protects these vast rice fields. The peasant tribe began building terraced fields in the 1st century AD. These structures are made with minimal equipment and largely by hand. Despite this, they are an engineering marvel.

According to reports, the steps look like steps that cover an area of about 4,000 square miles and have a total length of 12,500 miles. If these treads were end-to-end, they would cover almost half of the Earth’s circumference. Due to the threats and dangers associated with the area, UNESCO declared it a ‘World Heritage in Danger’, but after restoration and conservation work, the site was declared dangerous in 2012.

5) Borobudur, Indonesia

Known as the largest Buddhist temple in the world, Borobudur was built in the 9th century during the Sailendra Dynasty and took at least 75 years to build. The monument is a temple for Buddhists between Buddha and Javanese who visited the temple for pilgrimages and rituals. However, the temple was abandoned in the 14th or 15th century, most likely because of Javanese conversion to Islam. The temple was later buried in volcanic ash until it was rediscovered in 1814.

After its rediscovery, extensive restoration work began at the site, and the temple was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. Today, the site remains a place of pilgrimage. It is popular for Buddhist followers in Indonesia and they celebrate Vesak Day in the temple.

Angkor Wat is a large temple complex in northern Cambodia. The temple was originally built as a Hindu temple for Lord Vishnu. In the early 12th century, King of the Khmer Dynasty II. It was built by Suryavarman and turned into a Buddhist temple at the end of the 12th century. And now it is considered a Hindu-Buddhist temple. The magnificent monument sits on 400 acres making it the largest religious monument in the world.

The name of the monument means “temple city”. What makes it even more unique is that it is a temple dedicated to the god Vishnu, which broke away from the tradition of Shaivism by its previous rulers. Moreover, Angkor Wat, unlike other historical sites, is not abandoned, gradually becoming disrepaired and not used. The temple is now the symbol of Cambodia and is displayed on its national flag. Its impressive architecture and splendor are considered the eighth wonder of the world.

7) Amber Room, Russia- Eighth Wonder of the World Gone

The Amber Room was called the eighth wonder of the world before it disappeared. Built in the 18th century, the Amber Room is a room made of gold-plated amber panels. The great chamber was a tribute to the Tsar of Prussia, Peter the Great of Russia, celebrating their peace, and its beauty captivated the world.

But the Nazis stole the eighth wonder during WWII, and its whereabouts has remained a mystery to this day. The reconstruction of the room was ordered in 1979 and was finally completed in 2003. The new Amber Room is currently on display at the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Reserve outside St.

8) Pink and white stairs, New Zealand- The lost eighth wonder of the world

The Pink and White Steps in New Zealand are now considered one of the lost wonders of the world. But before it disappears, it is a sight to behold. These terraces were once on the shores of Lake Rotomahana and are the largest formation of silica sintering furnaces in the world.

The steps are pink on one side and white on the other, and this beautiful landscape was a tourist attraction in the 1800s, but the rice terraces disappeared and ‘disappeared’ after the eruption of Tarawera volcano in 1886. Today the steps are said to be semi-solid and at the bottom of Lake Rotomahana.
