Multi-read content everything i never told you summary

The story of Lydia Lee’s mysterious death moves back in time. The story begins with the announcement that sixteen-year-old Lydia – her parents’ favorite child – has died, although her family does not yet know. The Lees live in Middlewood, Ohio. Marilyn, Lydia’s white mother, wants to be a doctor. Her Chinese-American father, James, is an American history professor. Her hardworking brother Nathan is obsessed with space and went to Harvard. Her younger sister Hannah, in fifth grade, is a silent observer and is often overlooked. When Marilyn finds out that Lydia is missing, she is certain that Lydia has been kidnapped. Nathan assumes his neighbor Jack, a carefree loner who sleeps with many girls, knows something about Lydia’s disappearance. The next day someone saw a rowing boat in the middle of the city lake. The police arrived at the lake and found Lydia’s body.

The story shifts to the 1950s and provides background on Marilyn and James’ desires and concerns, including how they met, got married and ended up in Middlewood. The story returns to the present with Lydia’s funeral and Lee’s search for answers. The autopsy report found Lydia’s cause of death to be drowning, with no evidence of foul play. James finds solace in an affair with his teaching assistant, Louisa. Then the story revolves around a time when Lydia was a child and Marilyn hopes to continue her education. When Marilyn closed her mother’s house after her death, she was even more determined not to end up like her housewife in the 1950s. Marilyn decided to leave her family without explanation to complete her studies in Toledo. That summer, a young Nathan had a humiliating experience poolside for which he blamed Jack. The event reminds James of being teased as a child, but instead of comforting Nathan, he becomes harsh on him in hopes that Nathan will learn to adjust.

After Lydia’s death, Lees mourns privately. Fiske Police stated that Lydia may have committed suicide because she had no friends and was not doing well at school. Nathan continues to believe Jack is involved in Lydia’s death. The story then switches back to the summer Marilyn disappeared. James goes missing without a wife and barely cares for Nathan and Lydia. Nathan watches a space launch on TV to rekindle his fascination with space. Meanwhile, Lydia promises herself that as long as her mother comes back, she will do anything her mother wants. In Toledo, Marilyn’s aspirations were again thwarted by pregnancy. James arrives to take her home, where she decides to channel all her frustrated ambitions into Lydia. Annoyed by Lydia’s attentions, Nathan pushes Lydia, who can’t swim, into the lake. When he rescues her, Lydia becomes particularly dependent on Nathan.

Ten years later, Lydia struggles with her parents’ expectations – her mother’s desire to be a doctor and her father’s emphasis on having friends and being relevant. Lydia knew that she was also unsuccessful. She worries that Nathan might leave her to go to college. In physics class, when Lydia fails her exam, she begins to befriend Jack. Both drive around, smoke and talk.

The story continues after Lydia’s death. The police completed their investigation and ruled that Lydia’s death was a suicide. Misunderstandings tear families apart and create further rifts between Marilyn and James. James continues to find solace in Louisa. Meanwhile, Nathan still harbors suspicions about Jack. But Hannah is sure Jack didn’t do anything bad because she realized Jack was in love with Nathan a long time ago. When James wasn’t home, Marilyn looked for him at school and at Louisa’s.

The story then goes back to before Lydia’s death, when Lydia spends time with Jack and Nathan overseeing their activities remotely. Nathan caught Lydia tearing up one of his letters from Harvard. When James gave Lydia a heart locket as an early birthday present, she was initially smitten, but then saw the images inside — images of her dressing up for a dance at … school forced her to conform and conform — and she felt depressed and angry. On her sixteenth birthday, James and Louisa take Lydia to get her driver’s license. In the car, Lydia realizes that James is having an affair with Louisa. When she failed her driver’s test, Lydia blamed herself for being upset, but the truth was she hadn’t studied. At home, Lydia hides James under the bed but pretends to be happy about the birthday party.

The story returns after Lydia’s death. James comes home and confesses his affair. Misunderstood and hurt, Marilyn tells James to leave. Marilyn then angrily tears through Lydia’s room and finds her old cookbook, making it clear to Marilyn that Lydia loves her, not science. This moment breaks through Marilyn’s walls and Hannah finally gets to comfort her mother and gets the affection she craves. Meanwhile, Nathan gets in the car and gets drunk. On the way to Toledo, James realized how much he had misunderstood Marilyn. He turned the car over to go home.

The story goes back to shortly before Lydia’s death. Nathan attends Harvard and Lydia understands that he is becoming a new person who will leave his family behind. In order to change, Lydia decided to lose her virginity to Jack. But Jack gently rebuffs her and admits to loving Nathan. Feeling stupid, Lydia threatens to reveal Jack’s secret. Jack then makes fun of Lydia by telling her she doesn’t know what she wants.

At home, Lydia tries to figure out when something went wrong. In the middle of the night, she decided the answer was for Nathan to pull her out of the water. Lydia wanted to start all over again, this time do what she wanted and not be afraid, left the house and went to the lake. There she rowed to the center and tried to swim back to shore, although she could not swim.

The story ends after Lydia’s death. James returns home, hugs Hannah and makes peace with Marilyn. Nathan slept after the Fiske police got him home safely. The next morning at the lake, Nathan, watched by Hannah, takes out his anger and guilt about Lydia on Jack, who lets Nathan hit him. Hannah tries to stop Nathan and pushes him into the water. Nathan wanted to drown, but couldn’t. The story ends with positive mentions of the future and Jack pulls Nathan out of the water while Nathan keeps an eye on Hannah’s face.

Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet . . . So begins the story of this exquisite debut novel, about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee; their middle daughter, a girl who inherited her mother’s bright blue eyes and her father’s jet-black hair. Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue—in Marilyn’s case that her daughter become a doctor rather than a homemaker, in James’s case that Lydia be popular at school, a girl with a busy social life and the center of every party.
