This incredible Renaissance sculpture was created between1501 and 1504. It is a 14.0 foot tall marble statue depicting the biblical hero David depicted as a standing naked man. Originally commissioned by the Opera del Duomo forFlorence Cathedral, it is considered one of a series of large statues placed in the niches of church buildings about 80 meters above the ground.Michelangelowas asked by the Consuls of the Council to: aunfinished projectstarted in 1464 fromAgostino di Duccioand then on throughAntonio Rossellinoin 1475. The giant finally reached Signoria Square on June 8, 1504, where it was placed next to the entrance to the Palazzo Vecchio, replacing Donatello’s bronze sculpture of Judith and Holofernes.”.

After that, Michelangelo kept working to make it even better. That summer the sling and stump stand were gilded, and the figure was presented with a gilded victory wreath. Unfortunately, all gilding surfaces have been lost due to prolonged weather influences.

His statue of David, the most famous statue in the world, personifies the aesthetics of High Renaissance art, the politics of Renaissance Florence, and the technical virtuosity of Greek sculpture.
