Reading order of Narnia

To beThe lion, the witch and the wardrobeorThe Wizard’s Grandsonthe first book thereChronicles of Narniaby C.S. Lewis? Why are there so many orders? The answers below…

Publishing Orders

The books were originally published in this order:

  1. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950)
Prince Caspian: Return from Narnia (1951)
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)
    The Silver Chair (1953)
The Horse and His Boy (1954)
    The Wizard’s Nephew (1955)
    The Last Battle (1956)

Chronological order

Some time after CS Lewis’s death, English editions of the book began to appear and were numbered in the order in which the stories took place:

  1. The Wizard’s Grandson
  2. The lion, the witch and the wardrobe
  3. His horse and boy
  4. Prince Caspian: The Return of Narnia
  5. trip from
  6. dawn
  7. silver chair
  8. Last game

Switch to chronological order

for some years, bothOrder has been printed. American editions use publication order, while UK editions are numbered chronologically.

Chronological order became the standard worldwide after HarperCollins took over the publishing house in 1994.

So which book should I read first?

The lion, the witch and the wardrobe, the first book written and published, is often considered by scholars and fans to be the finest introduction to Narnia.

dr Paul F. Ford, author ofCompanions of Narnia.

aboveOfficial siteby C.S. Lewis, Dr. Charlie W Starrclaimthat “Lewis scholars almost universally agree” that the original order of publication is superior. He suggested thatThe lion, the witch and the wardrobeinitially more attractiveThe Wizard’s Grandsonthat there are some lines in itLionThere’s no point if the book isn’t read first, and thegrandsonhas greater mythological power when read as a prequel.

Why are the books numbered chronologically?

HarperCollins originally included this explanation in the book:

The HarperCollins editions of The Chronicles of Narnia have been renumbered to the original wishes of author C.S. Lewis.

In later editions, the statement was revised to:

Although The Magician’s Nephew was written several years after C.S. Lewis began The Chronicles of Narnia, he wanted it to be read as the first book in the series. HarperCollins is happy to recommend these books in Professor Lewis’s preferred order.

What did C.S. Lewis really say?

In 1957, an 11-year-old boy named Lawrence Krieg was preparing to read the books about Narnia for the second time. Lawrence wondered if he should read them again in chronological order, but his mother felt he should stick to the order in which they were originally published. So Lawrence wrote a letter to the author and received this reply:

“I think I agree with your request because reading is more than reading your mother’s books. The series wasn’t as pre-planned as she thought. Little did I know when I wrote The Lion that I would write more. Then I wrote P. Caspian as a sequel and still didn’t think there would be more and when I finished The Voyage I was pretty sure it would be the last. But I found I was wrong. So it probably doesn’t matter what order people read them in.”
CS Lewis, 4/23/57

This letter was cited by readers on both sides of the controversial decision to renumber the books. Proponents see this as clear evidence that Lewis wants the books to be read in chronological order. Opponents point out that in the same letter Lewis implied that the order “didn’t matter” and that he could have renumbered the books himself if he really wanted to.

Douglas Gresham, stepson of C.S. Lewis (“Jack”)to speak:

“[HarperCollins] asked, ‘What order do you think we should put them in? “And I said, ‘Well… I was actually wondering what order he liked better and what order he thought they should be read in. And he said that he thought they should be read in the chronological order of Narnia. “So I said, ‘Why don’t you do what Jack wants? “So it’s basically my fault – the order of Narnia chronology. And I’m not ashamed of it at all. ”
Douglas Gresham

But the movie

Walden Media’s Narnia films, in order of original release, are:

1. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
2. Prince Caspian (2008)
3. Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010)

This video will just look at the reading order for the Chronicles of Narnia and will not contain any spoilers. This is just my opinion on how they should be read.

The Chronicles of Narnia by Clive Staples “CS” Lewis, is a series of 7 books set in the fictional universe of Narnia. • The Silver Chair (1953)
