In 1960, Ben E. King was inspired to update the early 20th centuryGospelSinging “Stand by Me”aboutCharles Albert Tindley, basedpsalm, “We shall not fear, though the earth is removed, and though the mountains are brought into the midst of the sea.”[7]
According to the documentationHistory of Rock ‘n’ Roll, King had no intention of recording the song himself.[8th]King wrote it fordrifterswho recorded it. According to “Spain Harlem“When recording in 1960, King had some free time in the studio. The session’s producers, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, asked him if he had any more songs. King played them on the piano for them to listen to. They liked and called back studio musicians to record it.
Conversely, Stoller recalls:
I remember in our office when Jerry and Ben were composing the lyrics to a new song. King began a tune in which he sang a cappella. I came up with the piano and harmonies and developed the bass pattern that became the song’s trademark. Ben and Jerry quickly finished the text…. [9]
In another interview, Stoller said:
Ben E. started a song – both the lyrics and the music. He worked with Jerry on the lyrics and I added elements to the music, especially the bass. It’s based in part on a gospel song called “Lord Stand By Me”. I feel like Jerry and Ben E. were inspired by that. Of course, Ben has a solid background in church music. He was the one who wrote 50% of the song, and Jerry and I were 25% each… When I walked in, Jerry and Ben E. were writing the lyrics for a song. They are standing at an old oak table that we have in the office. Jerry sat in the back and Benny sat on top. They look up and say they’re writing a song. I said, “Let me hear you.” … Ben began to sing an a cappella song. I looked at the piano and saw the chord changes behind the melody he was singing. It’s in the key of A. Then I do a bass line. Jerry said, “That’s it!” We used our bass sample as a starting point and then used it as the basis for a string arrangement created by Stanley Applebaum. [ten]
Characters in the song include Romeo Penque on saxophone, Ernie Hayes on piano,Al Caiolaand Charles McCracken on guitars,Lloyd Trotmanon double bass, Phil Kraus on drums andGary Chesteron drums, plus instrumental and mixed choirs with string instruments. King and Elmo Glick are credited as the songwriters of the single – a pseudonym used by Leiber and Stoll.

The song has also been featured in television commercialsLevi’s 501Jeans. In the ad, a man wearing black jeans is allowed into a nightclub that has a “no blue jeans” policy.[13]The song also peaked at number oneUK Singles Chart1987 after a re-release, mainly because of an advertisement for jeans, which initially peaked at number 27 in their first UK release.
The song was not released on an album until it was released as a single for two years. The song appeared on King’sDon’t play this song!Album.
The song ranks at number 122Rolling Stonelist of500 greatest songs of all time. In 1999,BMIcalled it the fourth most-played song of the 20th century, with about seven million performances.[14]
On March 27, 2012,Hall of Fame of Composersannounced that the song would receive the 2012 Loud Song Award and that King would be honored with the 2012 Tower Performance Award for its recording.[15] Smooth radiocalled it one of the “best love songs of the 1960s” in February 2019.[16]
