Edmund de Waal explains his collection of 264 netsuke. Describing how these tiny 17th century ivory objects are both loseable and forgettable, he goes on to tell of their biographical significance. De Waal initially traces the netsuke’s story to his own childhood, to when he was a 17-year-old travelling through Japan as a pottery apprentice. Then finding his great uncle Iggy in Tokyo, and first seeing the collection of netsuke (hundreds of them) sitting on glass shelves, their story gets revealed and stretched back through Iggy’s memory and history. Uncle Iggy was endowed with these netsuke from his parents, overwhelmingly rich Jews who lived in a monstrous pink-gold place in Vienna. Before Vienna they had been in Paris and before Paris, they had undoubtedly been somewhere else. De Waal questions and explores how these tiny Japanese objects can reflect generations of his family’s identity, inheritance and diaspora.

In this stunningly original memoir, Edmund de Waal travels the world to stand in the great buildings his forebears once inhabited. He traces the network of a remarkable family against the backdrop of a tumultuous century. And, in prose as elegant and precise as the netsuke themselves, he tells the story of a unique collection which passed from hand to hand — and which, in a twist of fate, found its way home to Japan.

The Ephrussis came from Odessa, and at one time were the largest grain exporters in the world; in the 1870s, Charles Ephrussi was part of a wealthy new generation settling in Paris. Charles’s passion was collecting; the netsuke, bought when Japanese objets were all the rage in the salons, were sent as a wedding present to his banker cousin in Vienna.

Later, three children — including a young Ignace — would play with the netsuke as history reverberated around them. The Anschluss and Second World War swept the Ephrussis to the brink of oblivion. Almost all that remained of their vast empire was the netsuke collection, dramatically saved by a loyal maid when their huge Viennese palace was occupied.

In this stunningly original memoir, Edmund de Waal travels the world to stand in the great buildings his forebears once inhabited. He traces the network of a remarkable family against the backdrop of a tumultuous century and tells the story of a unique collection.

‘This remarkable book… a meditation on touch, exile, space and the responsibility of inheritance… like the netsuke themselves, this book is impossible to put down. You have in your hands a masterpiece.’ – Frances Wilson, The Sunday Times

‘It’s the most beautiful book I’ve read this year’ – Tracy Chevalier, The Daily Telegraph

When Edmund de Waal inherits a collection of 264 netsuke – ornate Japanese carvings made out of ivory and wood – he decides to trace back this strange inheritance through his family line.

De Waal’s search takes him to Paris, to walk the streets of Charles Ephrussi, a distant uncle and the original owner of the netsuke. It is the mid 19th Century, the Ephrussi’s are a notable Jewish family – kings of the European grain trade – and Charles lives in a world of fine art, fine homes and plenty of money.

At the turn of the century the netsuke are sent to Austria as a wedding present for Viktor and Emmy Ephrussi, who live in a grand home in the heart of Vienna. These tiny sculptures live a quiet life in Emmy’s dressing room until the Nazi party takes over Austria and the family’s possessions and property are ransacked.

How did the netsuke escape this purge to find their next home in Japan? De Waal’s search leads him to uncover a fascinating history of a European family who are buffeted by war, anti-semitism, dispossession and survival.
