Today: How many bodies are buried in Hoover Dam?

Hoover Dam Deaths

Constructed during the Great Depression between 1931 and 1936, the Hoover Dam – then known as the Boulder Dam – was one of the largest construction projects of the era. A massive concrete dome 725 feet high and 1,244 feet tall, the dam cost $49 million to complete and killed more than 100 people.

Hoover Dam Monument

reality

The high death toll is the source of many stories of workers buried/buried in Hoover Dam. The death rate was unusually high even for a project of this size, and as such captured the collective American imagination – that workers’ bodies would be thrown into the concrete mix and never seen again.

hoover dam construction

Consisting of approximately 4.5 million cubic meters of concrete, the Hoover Dam is divided into sections containing thousands of cubic meters of concrete. Each log should be allowed to set before pouring the next. Between pouring and tuning, a piece often takes hours to complete. It gives an uncertain manual worker ample time to escape the situation that permanently restricts the Colorado River.

Even if that’s not convincing enough, engineers will do their best to prevent a corpse – dead or alive – from being placed in the concrete of the Dam. The human body is made up of perishable organic materials, unlike rebars that are commonly used in large concrete projects. This rotting material creates quite a problem for a large concrete block. A rotting body will eventually create an air pocket in the concrete, reducing the stability of the block over time. The weight of the surrounding concrete combined with the restrained river forces can ultimately compromise the structural integrity of the dam.

The completed dam photographed by Ansel Adams.

Another possible explanation for the urban legend stems from another major dam project being built at the same time: Fort Peck Dam in Montana. Until it became the world’s largest embankment dam – unlike Hoover’s concrete – eight workers were buried alive. On September 22, 1936, part of the dam broke and slipped into man-made Fort Peck Lake. Only two of the eight workers were rescued from the crash, and though Fort Peck in Montana is a short distance from the Nevada/Arizona border, it’s easy to see how the accident site was messed up in 1936.

Fort Peck Dam

However, one thing is certain: Hoover Dam does not have a dam where bodies are buried.
