The number of living WWII veterans in the U.S. has plummeted since 2015

May 8 marks the 75th anniversary of the dayV-E tagwhen World War II ended in Europe. In the United States, V-E Day celebrations will honor the 16 million Americans who served in the war, though only a small fraction of those veterans are alive today.

According to this, around 300,000 US veterans of World War II will be alive in 2020United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).after the war wasin their 90s, Howevera significantly larger number.

Of350,000 womenwho served in the United States Armed Forces during the war, approximately 14,500 are alive today.

For this post about the number of US WWII veterans alive in 2020, we usedpopulation forecastcalculated afterUnited States Department of Veterans Affairs. The projections estimate the number of U.S. veterans from September 30, 2015 to September 30, 2045 each year.

VA projections show that from September 30, 2019 through September 30, 2020, 245 World War II veterans are expected to be missing each day. These forecasts were previously calculatedCovid-19 pandemicand does not account for deaths related to this disease. The last surviving American veteran of the war is expected to die in 2044.

Living World War II veterans are spread across the country, and the most populous states have the largest numbers. More than 30,000 war veterans live in California and Florida each. Each of these states is home to 10% of the total WWII veterans.
