About the sweetness under the cake

It’s the summer of 1950 – and at Buckshaw’s once grand estate, Flavia de Luce, a young chemist with a passion for poisons, becomes intrigued by a series of difficult events. : A dead bird is found at the door, strangely a postage stamp. fixed on his beak. Hours later, Flavia found a man lying in a pile of cucumbers and watched as he breathed his last.

For Flavia, who is both frightened and happy, life takes a serious turn when the murder hits Buckshaw. “I wish I could say I’m scared, but I’m not. It’s the complete opposite. It’s the most exciting thing that has ever happened to me in my life.”

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie on Goodreads

my magazine

A while ago, after revisiting and liking a mystery with a young storyteller, someone recommended the Flavia de Luce series to me. I borrowed THE SWEETNESS THE BOTTOM OF THE PIE from the library but maybe it was only halfway through and then I had to return it. I liked what I read, but I got caught up in other things and haven’t read it again until now.

Flavia is very agile and intelligent. He has an interesting relationship with his two older sisters, which consists of having a hard time and making fun of each other. There is also little to no protection and maintenance. It’s the only kind of thing I can mingle with my sisters. It’s kind of sweet.

I think Flavia deftly followed the thread of mystery, having childlike moments here and there between highly analytical research, experimentation, and deduction. I have a hard time believing that she’s 11 years old, but for some reason I didn’t care much when I read it.

One episode shows his father listening to a lengthy retelling of his life at school. That’s interesting because those are some of the real interactions we see between them, but it goes on for a long time and shifts the focus of the story to it from then on.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there are several (preferably) racially insensitive situations or comments in the story. I have listed them below in content. To be honest, these are the things I have the most trouble with as a commentator. This book is set in the 1950s and was published in 2009 (not so long ago). I feel that Flavia’s face painting and comments can easily be overlooked. They may have been historically accurate representations of ideas at the time, but including them seems insensitive to me and none of them matter to the story.

I love the mystery elements and I feel the characters are believable and interesting. I wish it didn’t include these few references.

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie on Amazon

content notes

Recommended for all ages12 up.

Representatives
It takes place in England.

Flavia’s father and a friend have a performance routine where they dress up as a Chinese man with make-up and a bad accent. Flavia later made a one-sided comment about the colonization of the natives’ “civilization” – though it’s unclear whether she meant it sarcastically. These may be historically accurate representations of emotions and behaviors at the time the story takes place, but at least they are free of racial sensitivities and prejudices.

Cursing / vulgar language content
Mild profanity is rarely used.

Romantic/sexual content
Flavia sees a young man kissing a young woman.

spiritual content
Not available.

Violent content – Warnings about bullying, suicide and murder.
Flavia is the youngest child in a family of three sisters, and her older sisters always defend her and sometimes bully her. Flavia also pranked her sisters. She also knew of a student whose father knew who was being bullied, she said.

Description of a man throwing himself off a terrace. Flavia discovers the body of a stranger who appears to have been killed in the garden.

Contains dangerous situations. Two scenes show Flavia hooked up and locked out.

Drug content
Adults drink socially.
