The Greatest Treasure

By Amit Garg

One day,

Peter found a treasure map.

“Hurray!

I’m going to find this treasure

and have some adventure!”

he exclaimed.

Peter set off.

He walked a long way

and finally reached a forest.

There he met Lion.

“You are strong and courageous,”

said Peter to Lion.

“Will you come with me

on a treasure hunt?”

Lion agreed and joined Peter.

The forest was dense and dark.

Peter was afraid,

but with Lion by his side,

he made it through.

When the two

finally reached the mountain,

they met Eagle.

“You have excellent vision

and can alert us to dangers,”

said Peter to Eagle.

“Will you come with us?

We’re looking for a treasure!”

Eagle agreed

and joined Peter and Lion.

The mountains were tall and craggy.

Lion slipped,

but Peter was swift enough

to give him a hand

and pull him up.

Eagle, with his sharp vision,

watched every step they took.

Soon, they reached the valley below

where they met Sheep.

“Will you join us

in our search for a treasure?”

Peter asked Sheep.

“And keep us warm when it’s cold?”

Sheep agreed and joined Peter,

Lion and Eagle.

A cold wind swept across

the endless meadow.

They all huddled against Sheep,

who kept them warm and cozy.

The four finally reached the desert,

where they met Camel.

“You are called

the ship of the desert,”

said Peter to Camel.

“Will you help us get across

and join the treasure hunt too?”

Camel agreed.

Peter,

Lion and Sheep

mounted the camel

and set off happily

across the vast desert,

with Eagle enjoying

the spectacle from above.

Camel began galloping

and everybody cheered

with excitement.

Crossing the desert on Camel’s back

was thrilling!

The five finally reached the ocean,

where they met Turtle.

“Can you help us cross the ocean?”

Peter asked Turtle.

“We are on a treasure hunt.”

Turtle agreed

and joined Peter,

Lion, Eagle, Sheep and Camel.

The rough waves

almost drowned the party,

but Turtle skillfully

transported them across.

They met Owl on the other side.

Owl spoke from his ancient wisdom:

“Congratulations,

you have found the treasure.”

“Where is it?”

they all exclaimed in surprise.

“Together

you have passed the forest,

climbed the mountains,

dared the valley,

braved the desert,

and crossed the ocean.

You would never have done it

without one another.”

They all looked at each other

and realized

that Owl was right –

they had found friendship!

Indeed,

they had found

the greatest treasure ever!

TRANSCRIPT:

Hello, my name’s Mariam and I’ve got an exciting story about pirates, treasure and murder, set on a tropical island far out at sea.

The story begins a long time ago, in London, where a skinny-looking young boy called Jim Hawkins lives. He finds a dusty old sea chest hidden in the cellar of his house. Using all his strength, he manages to lift open the heavy lid. He peers inside and finds a rolled-up piece of tattered old paper. In no time he’s unrolling the piece of paper, revealing a map showing an island with a cross on it. “Surely this must mean there’s treasure buried there?” he says to himself.

Knowing that it will only be a matter of time before someone else finds the treasure, he rushes off to find a ship that will take him across the sea to this distant island. The journey is long and at times the sea is rough and stormy. As time goes by, Jim realises the crew are not the honest and helpful bunch of men he believed them to be – they’re pirates! As they can’t be trusted, he doesn’t tell them about the treasure map – but the crew are suspicious.

At one time or another, an old pirate captain had hidden a horde of treasure on a secret island, and the pirates know this is where Jim is heading. One night he overhears them hatching a plan…

“This must be the island where Captain Flint left all that gold and silver” says one of them.

“We’ll let Jim lead us to the treasure and then kill him” says another.

We’ll leave the story there for now. Join me again soon to find out what happens when Jim reaches the island. Bye for now.

The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has visited Vekateswara Veda Vigyana Peetham run by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), at Tirumala on 4th June 2019, and called for translating Vedas into various Indian languages in a simplified manner for the common man to understand their importance.

Addressing the students and the teachers of the Peetham, the Vice President described Vedas as a veritable treasure house of knowledge and said they reflect India’s age-old traditions and culture. There was a need to protect, preserve and propagate the scientific knowledge contained in the Vedas on various aspects of life and bring them within the reach of the common man, he added.

Shri Naidu said that Vedas were not mere religious texts but contain knowledge of various disciplines such as mathematics, astronomy, agriculture, chemistry and metallurgy.

Observing that Vedas could provide solutions to the most complex problems and challenges of the modern-day world, the Vice President called for taking up research on the knowledge contained in Vedas. He expressed his anguish that this aspect was not being paid adequate attention in India, while countries like Germany were undertaking extensive research.

Describing the students of the Veda Peetham as modern day Rishis, he expressed confidence that they would preserve and propagate the invaluable treasure of Vedas. Claiming that Guru-Sishiya parampara was a proud heritage of Sanathana Dharma, he said that learning of Vedas exemplifies this noble tradition.

The Vice President said that TTD funds should be used exclusively for propagating Sanathana Dharma and providing facilities to pilgrims, but not for any other purpose.

The Vedic Teachers blessed Shri Naidu by performing Vedashirvachanam, while the students rendered vedic hymns.

Later the Vice President, his spouse, Smt. Ushamma and other family members along with other devotees had Annaprasadam under Nithyannadana programme run by TTD.

He expressed his appreciation to TTD for conducting such a massive ánnadaana’ programme on a daily basis for thousands of devotees.
