Multi-read content avenue of the giants california

Known in Northern California as the Avenue of Giants, the 31-mile stretch is one of the most scenic stretches of freeway in the state. I would put it next to the Big Sur coastline in terms of the sheer beauty you drive past. The shades of green, brown and yellow will blow your mind as you cruise windswept Highway 254 in search of your favorite forest. If you haven’t ridden this road you must add it to your wish list, it’s one of the best in California. These are my favorite stops on the Avenue of Giants. If you’re looking for a map, you’ll find one as soon as you exit the Autobahn on the right-hand side. I recommend taking a photo of it so you can refer to it while driving, or select one of the automatic sightseeing maps.

This is a video I made driving down the Avenue of Giants in 2019

story

Here’s a bit of history about the area:

The Avenue of Giants was the original section of 101st Street until a freeway was built in 1960. After that, the road was renamed Route 254 and maintained by the state. The park itself largely survived because three men walked down the street in 1917. As they drove through the area and witnessed the destruction of these majestic trees, they started a movement to protect the area and make it a public park. thanks for your workSave the Redwoods League, Avenue of Giants can be enjoyed to this day.

Map

Once you exit the freeway to begin the Avenue of Giants, you will see a roadside signpost with a map of the entire ramp. If available, you will also receive an automatic sightseeing map here.

Avenue of the Giants-6

The road itself is one of the prettiest parts of the area as you wind around curves that result in better views of the giant trees as you head deeper into the forest. Scenes like the one pictured above are not uncommon on Giants Avenue, and every half mile you’ll pass a sign for another stand of trees.

Bolling Grove

Bolling Grove is one of the first woods you come into, too, and it’s a great first stop on the driveway. It was one of the first forests to be saved and there are many large trees to see.

Shrine Drive Thru Tree

Shine Drive Thru Tree-3

Continue approximately 10 km, you will see the Shrine Drive Thru Tree on the left. That’s $10 well spent if you have family. The tree is very narrow to ride at about 7′ x 7′, but it’s fun. Even more interesting are all the other attractions they have such as; B. a “walking tree” for the children, a tree to drive on and picnic benches to relax. Read more about it here.

Williams Grove

Avenue of the Giants-3

A few miles from the entrance is Williams Grove. This forest is so majestic and perfect for a picnic. When you drive in you will see a parking lot from which you can go into the forest and explore it. There are trees to admire and benches to sit on. It’s a great taste of the woods and I recommend it because it gives you a taste of what’s in store before it gets any better.

visitor center

Avenue of the Giants-4

About 10 minutes down the road from Williams Grove is the Visitor Center. There are baths here, and I recommend looking at the map so you can get to one of the hard-to-find locations I’ll link to later in this post. If you want to ask them how to get to the Giants

Founder of Grove and Dyerville Giant

Founders Grove-17

If you only have time here for one thing, make sure it’s Founders Grove. This place is a great taste of redwoods and has one of the largest fallen trees I have ever seen in my life. When you see it it will give you a new perspective on how tall these trees are; I got blown away There is a 800m path with explanatory numbers which corresponds to an informative booklet and is a great way to see the life cycle of these trees. There’s also the massive ancestral tree right in the middle of the path. Read more about the founders of Grove here.

Huge tree

Giant Tree Flatiron Tree-5

If you ask about the giant tree at the visitor center

other forests

As you’ll see, there’s a lot of clutter to pull out during this ride. Didn’t see all of them but did a lot of research beforehand to visit the ones I did. If you have a little more time I’d recommend stopping by and checking out some of the other squirts as I’m sure they all make great stops when officially named. If you’ve ever been to a place that I’ve missed, let us know in the comments.

Eternal tree house

Eternal Treehouse-7

While not as exciting as the rest of the list, this little tree house was created inside a giant sequoia. You can get in there even when the cafe is closed and it’s a nice 5 minute stop down the street. Read more about it here.

Avenue of the Giants-2

There are dozens of other forests to explore and trails to hike. Here you should plan a whole day or at least half a day so that you don’t have to rush. Draw to your heart’s content and marvel at this majestic place. The view you will see here will surely stay with you for the rest of your life.If I missed something, be sure to leave it in the comments.

California travel guide Veronica Hill tours the Avenue of the Giants highway in the Northern California Redwoods in this episode of “California Travel Tips.”

Stretching 32 miles between Garberville and Fortuna, Avenue of the Giants is one of California’s best scenic drives. The road, which travels along Higway 101 on Route 254, is named for our state’s magnificent coastal California redwoods. They happen to be the tallest trees on earth — some reaching up to 380 feet tall and 26 feet wide.

Avenue of the Giants is one of the best places in the state to view these magnificent towering trees, and its easy to feel dwarfed as you travel down the shaded 2-lane highway.

When you enter the park, pick up a map that highlights the route and its attractions. If you want to make a weekend of it, you can camp at Burlington or Hidden Springs Campgrounds, or enjoy more modern comforts at the Myers Inn B\u0026B.

Our first stop is at the Immortal Tree, which is 250 tall and more than 950 years old. Inside the gift shop, you can pick up a map of Bigfoot hunting locations. Apparently more than 200 encounters have been reported in these parts, especially during the summer and fall. They say Bigfoot can get as tall as 14 feet, is a good swimmer, and sounds like a mountain lion — if you believe in that sorta thing.

After checking out Founder’s Grove in Weott, we head to Myers Flat to squeeze our SUV through the world-famous Shrine Drive-Thru Tree. There are three drive-through trees along the route, and each will set you back about $6.

Kids can explore the two-story tree houses, or get lost in the walk-through stump. Yes, it’s touristy — but loads of fun.

Welcome everyone to the absolutely amazing redwoods and Avenue of the Giants scenic tour. Kim and I took a long weekend and drove down the beautiful Oregon Coast and spent a couple days exploring the redwoods in Northern California. All I can say is it was magical, unbelievable, amazing. I think you get the point. We have been to a lot of of places and seen a lot of things but nothing can prepare you for these amazing redwoods. They are truly majestic. I hope you all enjoy our adventure and please feel free to leave any questions or comments. Not only does it help our video on YouTube but we also love to hear from you all. Hope you all are safe.

Avenue of the Giants – A Destination Vacation: Is a travel brochure featuring the world-famous scenic drive, which is a 31-mile portion of old Highway 101, that parallels Freeway 101 with its 51,222 acres of redwood groves. It is by far the most outstanding display of these giant trees in the entire 500-mile redwood belt and is accessible to all with convenient services provided along the way. The Avenue of the Giants is surrounded by the Humboldt Redwoods State Park which has the largest remaining stand of virgin redwoods in the world. Take time to browse tourist attractions in Humboldt County, CA, picnic, camp, hike, swim, fish, raft, or bike ride in the cool hush of these ancient redwood forests. Don’t miss visiting ROCKEFELLER FOREST, where 10,000 acres of indescribable beauty will surely awe any visitor. There are many trails in this forest, as well as, the 8th, 6th, 4th, and 2nd tallest trees, and the “Champion Coast Redwood” at 370 feet tall! S

Though not the oldest redwood in the forest, this large tree is over 950 years old, and is currently around 250 ft (76 m) tall, though originally it was much taller. It has survived not only the ravages of time but also the 1964 flood of the area, a 1908 attempt at logging, and a direct lightning strike which removed the top 45 feet (14 m) of the tree (making its original height close to 300 ft). It is from its age and the perceived hardiness to the fates that the tree derives its name. Markers are visible on the tree, denoting the heights of where the loggers’ axes and the floodwaters struck the tree.

Situated in the northern half of the Avenue, The Immortal Tree is easy to find, and has a large gift shop and parking area in front of it.

Founder’s Grove

Near Weott, this grove has an easy 1/2 mile self-guided walk with informational booklets available at the beginning of the trail. This well-travelled trail is a good example of old-growth redwood forest and contains a few very big trees, including the Founder’s Tree (346.1. ft. tall)[7] and the Dyerville Giant (c. 370 ft. tall) which fell down in 1991.

Drive-Through Tree

Avenue of the Giants features a tree that visitors can drive through. Shrine Drive-Thru Tree is near the town of Myers Flat. The tree is privately owned; the owner charges $8 or more for a car to drive through it.
