Title: Madonna of the Ancient Dragon Artist: Parmagianino Medium: oil on panel Location: Uffizi Gallery (Florence, Italy) Period: 1535-1540 Dimensions: 85 inches x 52 inches
The “Ancient Madonna” painted by Parmagianino makes a disturbing first impression of the Madonna and Child, but upon closer inspection and understanding, the beauty of the painting is revealed. Parmagianino uses a Mannerist style in his painting that gives the viewer a very disproportionate and distorted sense of depth. Instead of taking art from nature, as for example during the Renaissance, Menarchism took art from art. This is what Paragianino is doing in this painting as we can see that this painting is very similar to the earlier work of Michelangelo’s Pieta. Parmagiano takes the beauty and naturalism of the Renaissance and exaggerates it in an elegant stylistic representation.
Madonna and Child may appear haphazardly distorted at first glance, but a closer look and better understanding of the temporal significance may apply to some of the distortions shown. For example, the feature that gives this painting its name is the long neck that Madonna wears. Parmagianino deliberately lengthened his neck in honor of a popular carnival hymn that compared the Virgin Mary’s neck to a great ivory tower or column. The columns seen in the background further illustrate this idea and symbolize the religious value of the painting. Madonna is more deformed when she is in the shape of a diamond because her head and feet look very small and her hips are very wide. It almost becomes a landscape for the big baby Jesus lying on her lap.
Baby Jesus appeared as an unusually long and tall baby, lying motionless and apparently dead in his mother’s womb. This disturbing depiction of Jesus can be better understood by comparing it to Michaelangelo’s “Pieta”. In Pieta, Jesus is a grown man who died on his mother Mary’s lap, his arm hovering motionless across her lap. This image of Jesus is reflected in the “Long-necked Queen” when the infant Jesus lies dead in Mary’s lap and also lies with her arms hanging down. By mirroring the style of the “pieta”, the viewer is given a foreshadowing of what is to come towards the infant Jesus.
Mannerism can be seen as a strong reaction against Renaissance perfection, exaggerating proportion and depth to create a new style of art. Intended for a particularly intellectual audience, this art style seemed to be a mind game, challenging and changing what was known and done in the previous revision art. The misalignment seen in this image in Our Lady and Jesus is distorted in a specific way to convey the message that Jesus was born of Mary to be sacrificed in the end for the forgiveness of sins. Although this elegant painting appears daunting at first glance, a closer look reveals the true beauty it contains.
