CLEARbefore NBC existedWiz Live!starring Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, David Alan Grier and Stephanie MillsThe Wizard, a 1978 film based on the musical of the same name.

Previous production ofThe Wizardcould have been much better. It has a great idea (an African American take on The Wizard of Oz, where the characters don’t walk the yellow brick path, but walk down it slightly), a strong director (Sidney Lumet, who just nailed it).dog day afternoonandnetwork) and a solid cast (Diana Ross as Dorothy, Richard Pryor as Wiz, Nipsey Russell as Tin Man). And this is Michael Jackson, a year before he launched his solo career with timeless dance hits like “Don’t Stop’ Til You Get Enough” and “Off the Wall.” butThe WizardMost importantly to what’s going on behind the scenes, veteran producer Quincy Jones, Lumet’s longtime colleague cinematographer, is musical director, and he met future Thriller collaborator MJ by mentoring the young singer on the set of Socrates ‘ correctly pronounced. Jones then called his new friend and listened intently as MJ explained that he could hear songs that were already forming in his head and that he needed someone to help him write them down.

The Wizardcame out at the perfect time for Berry Gordy and Motown Records. QuitLady sings the bluesGordy had to take $2 million of his own money because Paramount’s top exec Frank Yablans told him that at the time, a studio could only spend $500,000 on a black film. “This is notblack foil,Gordy corrected him. “That is aMovieWithblack stars.“Clashes erupted on set as star Diana Ross went from music diva to Hollywood diva and demanded an upgrade of her vintage wardrobe. But the 1972 television series was ultimately successful, earning five Academy Award nominations, though Ross lost out for best actress to Liza Minnelli’s Liza Minnelli.bar.

In 1977, Motown bought the rightsThe Wizard, a screenplay based on a Broadway hit starring African American starsThe Wizard of Oz. Gordy and producer Rob Cohen cast the then 33-year-old Ross as Dorothy. The director who signed on after a few false starts was Sidney Lumet, who had worked with the young Al Pacinodog day afternoonandSerpico. At the age of 53, Lumet is a Hollywood veteran with a quick manner of speech that ends his sentence with “honey.” forThe WizardWith an orchestral beat, Lumet turns to an old friend to ask a favor.

He called Quincy Jones.

Q doesn’t want that. Jones only liked three songs on the Broadway show – “Home”, “Brand New Day” and a fun ensemble called “Ease On Down the Road”. But he is committed to Lumet, who has hired him for many films in the past. “I feel like I owe him more than one,” Jones said of Lumet. “I owe him a lot.”

Luminaires in stockThe WizardFeaturing top African American talent – Ross, Richard Pryor, Lena Horne. Rob Cohen, the head of Motown Productions, thought Michael Jackson would be perfect for the role of Scarecrow, and he approached Gordy with the idea. To his surprise

Gordy agrees. “Oh, Michael’s great,” the Motown boss said not far after years of litigating with the Jacksons over contracts. “Michael is a star.”

Lumet is harder to convince. He wanted Jimmie “J. J.” Walker, TV personalityGood times. “Michael Jackson is a Vegas act. Jackson 5 is a Vegas act,” the director told Cohen. Quincy Jones also suspected Jackson, but Cohen arranged a meeting and flew 19-year-old MJ to New York. In the end, Lumet and Jones saw the qualities Cohen saw. “The boy is so cute! He’s so bright! “Lumet was ecstatic. “I want him to be the scarecrow.”

The final hurdle was Joe Jackson, who wasn’t thrilled that Michael was embarking on a project to separate himself financially from the rest of his siblings. Cohen reassured Joe by offering Michael about $100,000 to play the scarecrow. WhenThe WizardThe 27-year-old producer began filming in New York and moved into a Manhattan apartment with Michael and La Toya, where Michael lived alone for the first time. He lives a normal life, save for one odd habit that Cohen accidentally discovered – bathing in Perrier water.

The shoots are long and persistent and last all day under the World Trade Center towers. In the evening, the young cast hung out in New York City. Cohen, along with other members of the cast, brought Michael to Studio 54, a disco hotspot known for both frantic sex escapes and celebrities like Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, Cary Grant and Brooke Shields. The rest of the club took notice when Michael Jackson danced. “The gay side of the dance floor is going to end,” Cohen said, “and the straight side is going to end.”

During lunch onThat wizardplace,Lumet, the director, tells a distracted Michael that the women around him “are like bullets going everywhere”.

On the set, Michael took his choreography very seriously with Louis Johnson, who was a pioneering African-American ballet dancer and had spent years punishing racism in Hollywood. In the film, Michael’s most impressive moves are with Diana Ross as he learns to walk awkwardly after being caged by crows on his puppet pole. He staggered in his giant clown shoes, rolled on the floor, and fell to his knees. “He saw Charlie Chaplin. He’s a big fan of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly,” said Johnson, who is in his 80s, over the phone from his home in New York. “So I let him use it… He asked me, ‘Can I do that? “- and then pick it up.” Jackson’s Scarecrow’s outfit is hot and messy, with a huge curly wig, hat and vest stuffed with torn newspaper, not to mention a painted nose. Tony Walton, the film’s costume designer and producer, had no idea that Michael was tormented by his brothers’ constant teasing – they called him “Ugly” and “Big Nose”. Walton said: “He was very emotional with his nose covered. His outfit, stuffed with newspapers and garbage bags, was bulkier, but Jackson managed.

Quincy Jones is always there. (In the film, Jones wears yellow and plays a giant piano in Times Square.) He was also beginning to notice Jackson. When it came to Scarecrow’s part, Michael went to the mic and began singing, not Michael Jackson in the scintillating voice of “I Want You Back,” but 18-year-old MJ, whose voice had grown as smooth and powerful as ever on Concorde. Cohen, the producer, noticed that Jones was gaping. Cohen said: “He looked at Michael the way a jaguar looks at a goat. “It was like, ‘I wanthe.'”

Jones moved on set. At one point, he swept Michael aside to explain a little about the scarecrow in the script — where the Greek philosopher’s name is pronounced.sock-ra-tees” not “sowing-insanity-People. When Jones told the story, he asked Michael at the time if he could “try his hand” at producing his next solo album. That stuck with Michael. TransparentThe WizardIn post-production, he called Quincy out of the blue at a time when there was rarely a tour break at home. They chatted for 45 minutes, the veteran producer doing most of the talking, about studio gear,War of stars, latest and unfinished synthesizer modelswizardClips he’s watched. Michael mostly listens with “mmm-hmm”And sometimes” whoo! When Quincy enthusiastically mentioned that he’d seen the Rolling Stones, Michael sniffed, “But you know that’s not talent.” The pivotal moment in this newly formed partnership came when Michael said he wrote the song, ” I heard something in my head. I make noises with my mouth – I can do it. Quincy got excited. “There is an instrument that can produce the desired sound. I can put everything on paper,” said the experienced arranger. “If you can hear it, I can write it down.” The exchange MJ recorded ended with Quincy asking for his number.

The WizardWorth $22 million and didn’t do well at the box office. It was a spectacular, flawed experiment. Michael and Diana have great chemistry, but Ross just doesn’t fit the role. Not because she’s too old (although she is old), but because she’s playing Dorothy the way she played Billie Holiday, with a tired, haggard world when the role, like Judy Garland played around the world forty years ago played, commonly called -sure, childish wonder. A less obvious problem is that Lumet’s then-wife, Gail Jones, Lumet’s daughter, co-starred during filming.wizardStar Lena Horne, went to the director on the set and asked for a divorce. Production designer Tony Walton recalls that the often pompous Lumet became depressed – a trait that’s particularly evident in the film. “Everybody cries sometimes — the lion cries and Diana Ross and the tin man,” he said. “None of that was actually in the script.”

The Wizardhave a timeless quality, especially the beautiful shots of Lumet’s hometown, highlighting landmarks like Coney Island, Shea Stadium and the Brooklyn Bridge. But his reception was marred by a racial backlash. Theater chains in white neighborhoods won’t planThe Wizardout of fear of the often white people of the makers

Cohen remembered sadly. “As big, stunning and musical as it was,” he said, “we never had a really solid distribution.” Black foil, outsideaxis, intended for a black audience. White films are for white audiences. Just like black music is for black radio stations and white music is for white radio stations, with brief exceptions like Motown and disco.

Need someone to fix this problem.

The Four Crows torment Scarecrow (Michael Jackson), making him repeat the Crow Commandments and sing the Crow Anthem.

FILM DESCRIPTION:

Sidney Lumet’s The Wiz is the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum’s classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of a young African-American kindergarten teacher who’s “never been below 125th Street.” Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz — which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late ’70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor), a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz — who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes. The Wiz has about double the large-scale production numbers of The Wizard of Oz (1939), with songs written and composed by Charlie Smalls.
