Multi-read content turkey in a straw lyrics

Turkey in straw has been a popular sport since the early 19th century, first among fiddle players. Today, the song’s melody is associated with the southern landscape. The song is often credited to Dan Emmett, the author ofPolly Wolly Doodle, but there’s not much to confirm that as the song is believed to predate him.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the lyrics were changed and they were sometimes overtly racist and performed by black musicians at minstrel performances. Two notoriously racist versions of the song entitled Zip Coon (which had been performed at minstrel concerts since the mid-19th century) and Nigger Loves a Watermelon were performed by Harry C. Browne in 2005. 1916

The original song was most likely inspired by the song “My Grandma Lived on Yonder Little Green”, itself inspired by the Irish song “The Old Rose Tree”. The song was originally intended to be non-racist and the current version is non-judgemental and was probably played around Thanksgiving due to the “turkey” in the lyrics.

“Turkey in Straw” lyrics.

As if I were human
Traveling
With a tired team
And a heavy burden
I break the whip
And the leader unfolded
I say day-day
To the car sign
Turkey in the Straw
Turkey in the hay
Turkey in the Straw
Turkey in the hay
Roll them up and screw them together
A-haw big
And beat them to a tune called
Turkey in the Straw
out of milk
And I don’t know how
I milk the goats
Instead of cows
A sitting monkey
On a pile of straw
wink with
His mother in law
Turkey in the Straw
Turkey in the hay
Turkey in the Straw
Turkey in the hay
Roll them up and screw them together
A-haw big
And beat them to a tune called
Turkey in the Straw
i go to the river
And I can’t get over it
So I paid five dollars
For a big brown hoss
Well, he won’t go first
And he won’t stop
So he paced
Like an old sawmill
Turkey in the Straw
Turkey in the hay
Turkey in the Straw
Turkey in the hay
Roll them up and screw them together
A-haw big
And beat them to a tune called
Turkey in the Straw
have you ever been fishing
On a warm summer day
If all fish
Swim in the bay
Put your hand in your pocket
And the trouser pocket
Have you ever seen a jar of fish?
Hootchy Kootchy dance?
Turkey in the Straw
Turkey in the hay
Turkey in the Straw
Turkey in the hay
Roll them up and screw them together
A-haw big
And beat them to a tune called
Turkey in the Straw

Here’s an animated version of one of our favourite US folk songs – “Turkey In The Straw” – with the lyrics on the screen for you to sing-along. It’s some old time folk music – enjoy folks!

Turkey in the Straw is one of the most well-known and well-loved American folk songs dating back to the early 19th century. The tune itself is derived from “My Grandmother Lived On A Yonder Green”, a derivative of Irish Ballad “The Old Rose Tree”. It was first popularized in the 1820s, and “Turkey In The Straw” was formerly created for fiddle players. Famous players included George Washington Dixon, Bob Farrell and George Nichols.

LYRICS

As I was a-goin’

On down the road

With a tired team

And a heavy load

I cracked my whip

And the leader sprung

I says day-day

To the wagon tongue

Turkey in the straw

Hey Hey Hey

Turkey in the straw

Hey Hey Hey

Roll ’em up and twist ’em up

A high tuck a-haw

And hit ’em up a tune called

Turkey in the Straw

Went out to milk

And I didn’t know how

I milked the goat

Instead of the cow

A monkey sittin’

On a pile of straw

A winkin’ at

His mother-in-law

Turkey in the straw

Hey Hey Hey

Turkey in the straw

Ho Ho Ho

Roll ’em up and twist ’em up

A high tuck a-haw

And hit ’em up a tune called

Turkey in the Straw

Turkey In The Straw

Hey Hey Hey

Turkey In The Straw

Ho Ho Ho

Roll ‘em up and twist ‘em up

A high tuck-a-haw

And hit ’em up a tune called

Turkey in the Straw
