On a recent visit to Southern Virginia my wife and I drove to Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson’s retreat. Built as a perfect one-story octagon withfour long octagons arranged around an almost perfect cube, Jefferson designed this architectural and engineering masterpiece as a respite from the hustle and bustle of public life.

Every year on July 4th, Americans remember Jefferson and others for co-authoring a document in which they boldly declare:

“We hold these truths for granted, that all human beings are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the prayer for happiness.”

Most of us in America are familiar with this passageDeclaration of Independence- often heard in our school social classes. What we don’t know is why Jefferson thought these truths were “self-evident” and where they came from in the first place.

A “self-evident” truth is a fact that proves itself without further confirmation. In other words, it is unequivocally true, only a fool or willfully ignorant person would object to this.

And in relation to the first manifestation of the American Enlightenment, our equality is not only true; it is literally “taken for granted”.

However, all kinds of objective measurements clearly show that we arenotParity: Some people are faster than others; some are stronger than others, some are more attractive, more artistic, better at money, better at math, better at cooking or arranging flowers and so on. The world is overcrowdedlarge and small competitions and comparisonsthis demonstrates this clearly to even the most superficial observerinEquality is an obvious truth.

So how did the Founding Fathers of the United States think differently?

That’s because the equality Jefferson and other authors refer to is mental, not physical. You speak of onemetaphysicsEqual rights; Equality is not based on physical characteristics or social structure. This metaphysical equality is the philosophical basis of the declaration to which the Founding Fathers of the United States pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor.

On first reading, one may wonder if this is a conflict between church and state. The proof isFirst amendment, it is not. While Jefferson and many other founding fathers believed in a divine being,they are not Christiansin the way the word means in contemporary American politics.

Rather, Jefferson and his colleagues simply recognized that any discussion of “rights” to have any philosophical meaning must be based on the metaphysical conception of spiritual equality, not on anything else in the physical world. Even God-given rights are “inviolable,” which means nomankindThey can injure organs; they are within ourselves.

Of course, it is all too clear today that Jefferson and the other Founding Fathers failed to extend these obvious rights to a significant portion of their young nation’s population. Similarly, we can also see that today’s American justice system, no matter what sublime metaphysical truth it is based on, falls short of its own ideals.

From the point of view of yoga philosophy, the main cause of this failure is forgetting our common spiritual nature. Yoga is the art and science of remembering our true spiritual nature. Therefore, the practice of yoga is inherently a political act. In fact, it is the most radical form of political action that we can take.

By “political action,” I don’t mean that we unroll our yoga mats on the Washington Mall and point “Warrior Pose” at the Capitol building (however you can feel comfortable). What I mean by intercession, service, non-cooperation, and action aligns directly with the values ​​of yoga: renunciation of unnecessary materialism, purity of thought, word, and deed, kindness to all sentient beings, and honesty.

Honesty means more than just fending off fake news andLeaders are clearly liars; it means defending the metaphysical truth that defines our equality and our rights, it means ringing the “liberation bells” that will awaken us from the spell of spiritual oblivion that is so essential at the heart of almost all our political conflicts.

Yoga does not encourage us to accept nationalistic sentiments; it encourages us to engage in the service of an all-encompassing absolute truth.

July 4th – United States “Independence Day” – is a secular holiday that carries with it the seeds of spirituality. The chance to realize the American ideal of liberty and justice for all lies in planting this seed.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Many of us recognize these words, written by Thomas Jefferson, a slave owner. Yet, our nation’s history has not put these ideals into action. It took over a hundred years for women to get the right to vote, and many decades after that for Black people to get the legal right to vote, and not until 1968 was housing segregation made illegal, at least in law if not in practice.

The differences that divide white people and people of color in our country’s history and present day experience are important to understand and appreciate if we are going to build a world of justice and equal opportunity.

So what is our responsibility now to deal with that history? That is some of what we will be discussing tonight.

We will hold a conversation across race and across generations.
