James Buchanan, 15th President of the United States (1857-1861), served just before the American Civil War. He remains the only President elected from Pennsylvania and a lifelong bachelor.

Tall, dignified, dignified with the high-class suit he wore, James Buchanan was the only President who was never married.

As President of a rapidly dividing country, Buchanan had an inadequate grasp of the political realities of the time. He relied on constitutional doctrines to close the growing rift over slavery, failing to understand that the North would not accept constitutional arguments in favor of the South. Nor did he realize how decentralization had reorganized political parties: the Democrats were divided; The Whigs were destroyed, resulting in the Republicans.

Buchanan, a graduate of Dickinson College, was born into a wealthy Pennsylvania family in 1791 and was gifted at debate and law.

He was elected to the House of Representatives five times; then, after a hiatus as a Russian minister, he served in the Senate for ten years. He became Polk’s Foreign Secretary and Pierce’s Minister for Great Britain. Service abroad helped earn him the Democratic nomination in 1856 as it exempted him from taking part in bitter domestic controversies.

As president-elect, Buchanan believes that if he maintains a partial balance in his appointments and can persuade people to accept constitutional law as it is, the crisis will go away. The court considered the legality of restricting slavery in the territories, and two judges suggested to Buchanan what the decision would be.

Thus, at his inauguration, the president called the territory issue “a happy one, a matter of little practical importance” because the Supreme Court wanted to settle it “quickly” and finally.”

Two days later, Chief Justice Roger B. Taney announced Dred Scott’s decision, claiming that Congress had no constitutional authority to dispossess enslaved people in territories. Southerners were enthusiastic, but the decision sparked a wave of outrage in the North.

Buchanan decided to end the riots in Kansas by pushing for the territory’s recognition as a slave state. Although he focused his incumbent presidency on that goal, he continued to anger Republicans and alienated members of his own party. Kansas is still a territory.

When Republicans gained a majority in the House of Representatives in 1858, every major bill they passed was defeated by a Southern vote in the Senate or by a presidential veto. The federal government reached an impasse.

Partisan conflict increased to such an extent that in 1860 the Democratic Party split into two northern and southern wings, each with its own candidate for the presidency. Therefore, when Republicans nominated Abraham Lincoln, the implication that he would be elected was ignored, even though his name did not appear on the Southern ballot. Instead of accepting a Republican government, the “fire-eaters” in the South favored secession.

President Buchanan, frustrated and hesitant, denied states the right to legal secession but argued that the federal government had no legal power to stop them. He hoped for a compromise, but the Separatist leaders were unwilling to compromise.

Then Buchanan made a more military offensive. When several cabinet members resigned, he appointed northerners and sent the Star of the West to bring reinforcements to Fort Sumter. On January 9, 1861, the ship was far away.

Buchanan returned to a policy of closure, which continued until he left office. In March 1861 he returned to his hometown of Wheatland, Pennsylvania – where he died 7 years later – leaving his successor to deal with the terrible problem facing the nation.
