Multi-read content anne lamott shitty first drafts

Basically, to break down Lamott’s advice for us, you need to understand that your writing is a process. Being patient and only doing the writing to create a rough draft is a good way to gain access to the best version of your writing. As in math, the process of writing resembles a “trial and error” concept. I like the last paragraph of the essay because it summarizes the advice Anne gives us in three steps or concepts (she mentions some of these terms from her friends):

The first step or concept is “design”. Here’s your thoughts on paper to actually analyze something for later editing (this will be your bad draft as Anne says). The second step would be to create a “draft” that edits that first draft. (This is your second step, going back to your first draft and making your article more concise. Finally, your “tooth draft”. You check the status of each “tooth”. In the writing process, it is possible to change your essay from 6 pages to 4 pages shorten

This has to do with fiction, because when writing a novel or any other type of writing, you can use this process to make things easier and cheaper when you’re not sure which direction to go. Especially for me sometimes my process stops while writing for various reasons. I think looking at something like Anne’s essay might help to overcome this problem. As Anne mentions in the essay, there are writers who can make a living and make a living from writing. But we have to remember that many of them went through a writing crisis just like us (even as students in a creative writing class). Anne explains in her essay that she has been involved with kitchens and restaurants for years, but when it comes to writing, she panics.every time. Although fiction has very few limitations, we can still use this wonderful process to grow as writers. Practice can improve.

As for fiction, I think of this essay and how difficult the writing process can be for many people. I remember our first writing assignment for this class was to create a story. (Like “The Dinosaur”) In my opinion, exercises like this can be difficult because we just don’t want a bad draft. Even if it’s the first thing we write, we want our writing to be good. Even if it’s just a sentence or a whole novel. For someone who may not be familiar with Anne’s idea of the writing process, the idea of a shabby first draft isn’t appealing – it may not be something they’re comfortable with yet. However, the process is still important for gaining clarity on how to improve your writing. I think considering advice like Lamott’s can be very enlightening for new and experienced writers. It can encourage writers to get used to the idea of ”this is just a first draft” instead of thinking “this is bad, so I’m a bad writer”.

I think this process can move someone from a rigid mindset to a growth mindset that includes the writing process. As Lamott said, you have to trust the process. So understanding of text can improve with revisions, time and thought are key to mastering this concept. A few incomplete first drafts are what can end up resulting in some of our best work.
