1928 floats on the dock in Germany

Aswimsuitmade of wool? It’s correct. In the 1920s, the idea of going to the beach and actually getting in the water to swim was still fairly new. The function of a swimsuit isn’t as important as the fashion, so the popular theory is that wool helps keep you warm. When recreational swimming became popular in the 1920s, manufacturers beganswimwearhad to adapt and make swimwear for swimming.

Jantzen revolutionized swimwear material with a stretchy, ribbed top that fits better than a regular top and is definitely more comfortable than thick wool. Both men’s and women’s swimwear are similar in design and material. Readhere is my article on the history of swimwear in the 1920s.

1923 – Ready for the beach

Better material makes it easier to swim, but also shows more feminine curves. The necklines fall down to the round neckline or deep V-neckline. The armholes are larger to facilitate real swimming.colorJust as vibrant as the other 1920’s tracksuits – red, blue, orange, black, gray and kelly green with contrasting stripes. An optional white rubber belt kept the two-piece suit from floating in the water.

The swim cap keeps the girl’s bouncy hair from slipping. The idea of swimming is very popular – the sport is practically limited to serious athletes. Most beachgoers just play in the water, wade through the water and can paddle around in the shallows.

1922 swimming cap

“Pilot” style rubber swimming cap fits like a hatbell hatwith an optional strap under the chin in the mid to late 1920s. Before that, ruffled hats or scarves were used to keep hair dry. They come in a variety of designs, from the simple to the dramatic, with large bows, tassels, and buckles. They are made in bright colors like red, blue, green or natural rubber (see image at the top of the page). While swimwear is easy, swimming caps are fun.

WhenswimwearWomen are also getting smaller and have to watch out for the beach police, who patrol the area, ruler in hand. These skin moderators measure the distance between the bottom of a woman’s swimsuit and her knees. Too much bare skin can result in a $10 fine or even jail time! Most of these rules of modesty were repealed in the mid-1920s—too many women just don’t conform and too many men prefer the new perspective.

1922 Beach Police humility test

Modest women can still wearswimming skirt — a skirt longer than the attached shorts. However, Jantzen created a very popular suit in 1921 that looked like it was a two-piece suit. If you haveSew tank tops to swim trunks today, have something similar to a Jantzen suit.

1922 modest swimwear

However, swimming trunks or skirts are usually no higher than a few inches above the knee and women are usually required to wear themblack socksandshoes. At first the socks rolled down past the knee, but they continued to roll down to the ankle. “Why wear them?” was the attitude in the early 30’s.

As the decade has progressed, swimwear has become more and more interesting. Stripes have been woven into the designs, making the fit tighter and the length even shorter.

Sexy in swimwear was slowly evolving.Catalina swimwearSome boundaries have been pushed with the Rib Stitch 5 backless swimsuit, but what really fits the swimwear and sexy concept is the proliferation of swimwear pageants.

In 1921, the Atlantic City Business Men’s League took the advice of a columnist at a local newspaper and added to their Atlantic City Fall Frolic post-lab beauty routine. The women in bathing suits competed with other women from other cities, who earned a trip to Atlantic City by winning local contests. Catalina was one of the earliest sponsors of this pageant, becoming Miss America in 1940.

The swimsuit competition also included a show of dancing talent.

Miss swim contests aren’t just on the east coast. In California cities like Newport Beach womenbring an umbrellain a one-piece armored suit and beach boots literally strutting up and down the boardwalks.

However, not all Californian bathing beauties go there just to get a tan or win a beauty pageant. For some, it’s the road to fame. It worked for Carole Lombard. Before becoming an acting legend and wife of Clark Gable, Lombard made her film debut in 1928 as one of Mack Sennett’s Beach Beauties.

Swimwear – make it yourself or buy it

In the 1920s it wasn’t too difficult to sew a bathing suit for a man or woman. Find another ribbed cotton tank top and cycling shorts. Add stripes and hem with tape, or buy a bullet top with contrast trim already attached. You can also draw on strips (see below). Add a white elastic waistband and swim cap, sunglassesand you’re done!

This guideteaches you how to sew a swimsuit out of a men’s t-shirt (sewing required).

1920s style ready-to-wear swimsuits are hard to find. There are quite a few sewing and knitting patterns out there if you are talented enough to do it yourself. If not, I look for simple swimsuits with contrasting white stripes, swim trunks, or long-top two-piece sets such aspeople in Modli. Here are some 1920s style swimwear and models.
