Both options can be funded through ApplePay, GooglePay, PayPal or most credit cards. You don’t have to worry about exact changes and you can get into the car faster.

F market

If paying in cash, please have the exact cash fare ready prior to boarding ($3.00 for adults; $1.50 for seniors/disabled). Muni tram and bus operators do not have change. Deposit cash in the ticket box near the operator. Show transfers and transfers to the operator. The transfer is only issued upon boarding and is valid for 90 minutes. The transfer is not used on the cable car but can be used on the Muni subway and bus lines.

You reach the cable car station earlier in the morning, you get on the train faster. If you are staying in Union Square or the general downtown area, aim to be on Powell and Market Streets by 8:30am to get to the Wharf. When you reach the Wharf, stop for a cup of coffee or take a quiet stroll along the waterfront if the attractions you want to visit aren’t open yet. Compare the same concept when you are near Wharf.

During peak hours, which include most summer days from 10am to 6pm, you can often queue at a turntable for about an hour to board the Powell Street lines. And while there’s a cable car line that stops at almost every corner along the route, at peak times the Powell Lines are often full of them or very close to exiting the station, meaning they overtake people waiting at the stops need the way.

Another alternative, especially for those without children, is to travel after 8 or 9 p.m. The lines are usually non-existent at this time and you can board the train immediately.
