Jesus said in John 14, “In my father’s house were many mansions; if it wasn’t so, I would have told you. let me prepare a place for you And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you; where I am, there you also are” (John 14:1-3).

This is the King James version familiar to many Christians and whose language is deeply embedded in Christian hymn and piety.

However, it is one of the most misunderstood passages in the Bible. The point is that Jesus’ words of comfort were seen here through the prism of medieval conceptions of heaven rather than in the light of the Old Testament and other teachings of Jesus.

What do we find when we carefully examine the entire chapter? Some key points:

“Many villas.”In the days of King James, a “mansion” was a room, not a large, lavish house. Today, most translations say “many places” (NRSV) or “many places,” as TNIV helpfully explained. The main meaning of Jesus is this: There is much room with God. (Apparently not to the confusion of many Christians that “in my Father’s house there are many mansions” is meaningless since “castle” is commonly understood.)

“My father’s house.”This does not mean paradise. Heaven is not mentioned once in the whole chapter. So what is “Father’s house”?

Jesus spoke in the context of all of the Old Testament revelation. In the older Bible, God’s “house” or “dwelling” is a very rich concept. It basically means the place or places where God’s presence is manifested. In the Psalms, God’s “house” or “dwelling” is often the temple in Jerusalem. In other cases it refers to all of creation or even to the entire universe. Some Psalms describe God Himself as our “dwelling place” (Ps 90:1, 91:9).

The bottom line is this: God’s “house” or “dwelling” is wherever God is and wherever His presence is manifest and His will is done. This is what Jesus assumed in many of his sermons. The meaning of John 14:2 is, “There are many places with God.”

“Let me go and prepare a place for you.”Jesus assured his apostles that in his departure (through his crucifixion and death) he completed the next step in God’s plan for the fulness of his kingdom.

This verse repeats God’s words to the Israelites in Exodus 23:20: “I will send my angels ahead of you to protect you on your way and to bring you back to you. Come where I have prepared you.” Very confidently, Jesus fulfilled all the OT promises about himself. Mention the promised land in Exodus. In the New Testament, in fulfillment of the promises to the whole earth, the Promised Land was created anew as “new heavens and new earth.”

Thus, Jesus’ words here mean, “I go to complete the next step in fulfilling God’s promises of salvation and healing of creation.”

A deep truth

John 13-16 is a tightly woven discourse and reformulated allegory, deeply introduced by Jesus’ prayer in John 17. John 14:1-3 is considered in the context of Jesus Christ. John 14 itself has several related allusionsHome page, residents, and tocomeandwalk. E.g.:

“I will prepare a place. . . I will come back and bring you to you” (v. 3)

“My Father will love [those who love me and keep my commandments], and we will come to them and make our homes with them” (versus 23).

“I am going and I will come to you” (v. 28).

In these passages Jesus explains the inexplicable. Note the many confusing questions and responses from the apostles in John 13-16. They find themselves struggling but often failing to achieve it.

Like us, the apostles were limited to space-time. That explains much of their confusion. Jesus said: Not about when and where; who it is about; about the relationship.

A subtext of this entire passage is John 13:7: “You will understand later.” Notice other similar passages: “Jesus used this expression to them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them” (John 10:6). “For they did not understand the Scriptures, that he had to be raised from the dead” (John 20:9). And especially: “In the beginning his disciples did not understand these things; but when Jesus was glorified they remembered that these things were written about him and done for him” (John 12:26).

The point in John 14:2-3 is not the place but the person – Jesus Christ. The important saying is: “Where I am, there you will be.” And where will Jesus be? For a time in heaven or Eden, but then finally and forever on earth when all is made new.

John 14:1-3 does not speak of heaven. It is about “dwelling” with God forever—beginning now on earth and in the “heavens” (Ephesians 1:3, 2:6) as we love one another, love him, and keep his commandments; for a time in heaven before Jesus returns; and finally in the new creation – new earth and heaven.

Jesus didn’t say in verse 3, “I will take you up to heaven.” He said, “I will take you to me.” And Jesus promised to return to earth once and for all.

Point in John 14:1-3: No place. More like people and relationships. Finally, Jesus established a perfect shalom relationship between himself, man and all creation. Well, Jesus “must be in heaven until the time of the universal restoration which God announced long ago through His holy prophets” (Acts 3:21).

In My Father’s House recorded by Elvis 30 October 1960; RCA Studio B – Nashville. Written by: Aileene Hanks. Originally recorded by Wally Fowler And The Oak Ridge Boys in 1954 . Lyrics: In my father’s house are many mansions

If it were not true he would have told me so

He has gone away to live in that bright city

He’s preparing me a mansion there I know

Jesus died upon the cross to bear my sorrow

Freely died that souls like you might have new life

But I know that soon there’ll come a bright tomorrow

When the world will all be free from sin and strife

(Do not shun the saviors love, from up in glory)

(Or you won’t be there to sing the gospel story)

In my father’s house are many mansions

If you’re true then to this land you’ll surely go

An attempt to visualize one of the most important statements of Jesus Christ. I used the images of the Brooklyn Bridge and New York. But reality will be much more beautiful and grand.

John 14 King James Version (KJV)

1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
