Flag confusion is common.

Who did it?

Narciso López used this flag to liberate Cuba from Spanish rule in 1850, but the result was a failure.

Cuban flag

On the morning of May 20, 1902, the day Cuba officially became an independent republic, Máximo Gómez received the honor of raising the flag on the flagpole of Tres Reyes del Morro Castle in Havana.

The end of this act was the end of the Cuban Revolution, the end of the Cuban struggle for independence.

Both the Cuban flag and coat of arms were designed by Miguel Teurbe Tolón. The design of both specifications was established on April 21, 1906 by the first President of Cuba, Tomás Estrada Palma. Since then it has remained unchanged.

Flag of Puerto Rico

The López flag was the model for the Puerto Rico flag adopted in 1892 by the Puerto Rican Revolutionary Committee, a pro-independence group operating under the auspices of the Cuban Revolutionary Party.

Patriot Francisco Gonzalo Marín, in a letter from Jamaica, suggested adapting the Cuban flag with inverted colors.

He put the proposal to several Puerto Rican patriots during a meeting at Chimney Hall, and it ended up being unanimously approved.

Who Made a Puerto Rico Flag?

Antonio Vélez Alvarado in his Manhattan apartment. He stared at the Cuban flag for a few minutes and then looked at the blank wall it was hanging on.

Vélez suddenly recognized aoptical Ilusion, in which he perceives the Cuban flag with the colors in its triangles and inverted stripes.

Almost immediately he visited a local dealer, from whom he bought some crepe paper to make prototypes. He then showed his prototype over dinner at his neighbor’s house. Owner, Micaela Dalmau vda. de Carreras, invited José Martí as a guest.

Martí was impressed by the prototype. He documented this in an article published in the Cuban Revolutionary Newspaper.

Acceptance of the prototype was slow but has grown over time.

Also in a letter from Maria Manuela Besosa, daughter of Puerto Rican Revolutionary Committee member Manuel Besosa.

She claims that she sewed the flag. This led to the assumption that her father may have been the designer. In her letter she described the flag as consisting of five alternating stripes from red to white.

Although the local newspaper “El Imparcial” stated on January 17, 1948 that Vélez Alvarado was the father of the Puerto Rico flag, this could be the casenever knownwho actually designed the current flag.

The government regulates the colors to be used, but does not specify official hues or shades. As such, it is not uncommon to see the flag in one of two shades of blue in official settings in Puerto Rico.

The Cuban flag is known for being commonly used in restaurants, cafes and bars that admire Cuban culture.
