Multi-read content the man at the pool of bethesda

pool of bethesda in the bible

by Max Lucado

After some time, Jesus went to Jerusalem to attend one of the Jewish holidays. There is now a swimming pool in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate, called Bethesda in Aramaic, surrounded by five covered pillars. There are many crippled people lying here – blind, lame, paralyzed. A person who has been there for thirty-eight years is worthless. When Jesus saw him lying there and realized that he had been in this situation for a long time, he asked, “Do you want to be healed?” he asked.

“Sir,” the patient replied, “I have no one to help me get into the pool when the water is agitated. Someone fell in front of me while I was trying to get in.”

Then Jesus said to him: “Get up! Take your mat and walk. ” The man recovered immediately; He lifted his cushion and walked away.-John 5:1-8

Its name is Bethesda. It could be called Central Park, Metropolitan Hospital, or even Joe’s Bar and Grill. There may be homeless people gathered under an overpass in the city centre. Could be Calvary Baptist. It could be any group of people who are harmed.

An underwater source causes the pool to bubble occasionally. People believe that it originates from the wings of angels dipped in bubbles. They also believe that the first person to touch the water after the angel will be healed. Does healing occur? I do not know. But I know a lot of wounded soldiers who came to try.

Imagine a battlefield filled with wounded bodies and see Bethesda. Imagine a crowded and understaffed nursing home and you see the swimming pool. Remember the orphans of Bangladesh or the abandoned children of New Delhi and you’ll see what people see as they drive through Bethesda. As they passed, what did they hear? An endless wave of groans. What did they witness? An area of intangible needs. What did they do? Most of them pass without paying attention to people.

But not Jesus. In Jerusalem for a party. He is alone. He wasn’t there to teach his students or to attract a crowd. People need it – so it’s there.

can you picture it? Jesus walks through suffering.

What does he think? What does it do when it touches an infected wrist? When a blind child stumbles on the path of Jesus, does he reach down to catch the child? How did Jesus respond when a crumpled hand was extended to give alms?

How does God feel when people get hurt, whether the water source is Bethesda or Bill’s Bar?

The story matters if all we do is watch him walk away. Even knowing that he was coming was valuable. You don’t have to, you know. There are definitely more hygienic crowds in Jerusalem. There are definitely more interesting activities. After all, it’s Passover. It was an exciting time in the holy city. People had come from miles away to meet the Lord in the temple.

Little did they know that God was with the sick.

Little did they know that God walked slowly, carefully among the beggars and the blind.

Little did they know that the mighty young carpenter examining the worn landscape of pain was God.

think

• What do you think prompted Jesus to come to Bethesda for a celebration?
• What does Jesus’ actions in this story teach us about his character?
• How can we show God’s love to the afflicted?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Pool of Bethesda is located near the Church of St. Anne not too far away from the Lion’s gate right near the beginning of the Via Dolorosa at the Old City of Jerusalem.

Since Jerusalem is located on a mountain and because of the scarcity of rain in this region, people used to collect spring and floodwater in big cisterns and pools similar to the pools and cistern that we have here. During the second Temple period, this pool and the surrounding area were used to heal and treat the disabled and this is why this place is called “Bethesda” which means “House of Mercy” in Aramaic.

Now you’re probably asking what any of this has to do with Jesus.

So this is where Jesus performed one of his miracles of faith. Legend has it that once a day, an angel would grace this pool and stir up the water. The first ailing person to get into the water when it began to stir would be healed immediately. As a result, many disabled people could be seen lying next to the pool waiting for the angel to come and stir up the water. According to the Gospel of St. John 5:2-9, Jesus was walking in the pools’ vicinity and saw an ailing person lying next to the pool who had been an invalid for 38 years. When Jesus asked him if he wished to get well, the man told him that since he is so weak, every time the water is stirred, someone always beats him to the pool. Then Jesus said to him “Get Up! Pickup your pallet and walk” and that’s exactly what happened. The man was cured at once.

Now here below is the southern pool of Bethesda, at the end of the winter where you can see the pool with water.

If we look around, aside from the pool, there are the remains of several archeological finding.

Here right next to the pool is the remaining of a Byzantine Basilica for the 5h century.

And here is a Roman pagan temple from the 2nd century for Asclepius, the Greek God of healing. And over there is the remaining of a Crusader Chapel from the 12th century.

Getting back to the present, in the middle of New York’s Central Park, there is a fountain with an angel’s status: the Angel of the Waters Fountain at Bethesda Terrace.
