tree-octopub“Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus (Octopus paxarbolis) can be found inTemperate rainforestthe Olympic Peninsula on the west coast of North America. Their habitat is on the eastern slopes of the Olympic Mountains, adjacent to the Hood Canal. These solitary cephalopods reach an average size (measured from the tip of the arm to the tip of the mantle) of 30-33 cm. Unlike most other cephalopods, tree octopuses are amphibians that only spend their early life and mating seasons in the aquatic habitat of their ancestors. Due to the humidity of the rainforest and the special adaptations of their skin, they may not stay dry for long, but it’s likely that they prefer to rest in the tank water. “

ok – there is a photo, a fairly accurate description, an article and even a website.

Of course there is no such thing as a “Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus”.
The Tree Octopus is a hoax created by the University of Connecticut in 1998 to test seventh graders’ ability to decipher fake Internet “news”.
All have failed. Some people claim that an octopus does in fact live in trees despite being told it’s research/hoax (known as persistence of belief).

News media, social media, websites and more have run with this hoax and given it more clout.

Some of us would question the legitimacy of such an outlandish claim, even though it’s backed up with websites, photos and more (really check out the website – what a great thing!). However, it shows that teenagers are gullible and too easily influenced by what they see online.

Unfortunately, this is the case for many adults.
