Multi-read content there was an old lady who swallowed some leaves

Our recent story sessions have focused on trees and orchards, so our next logical step is to talk about leaves and the seasonal changes they are beginning to experience.

I started with a callback for a read-aloud I used earlier this year:There was an old woman who swallowed a flyby Simms Tobacco. We read and used the book againinteractive doll grannyto reenact the story, then turn it into another “old lady” book:There was an old woman swallowing leavesby Lucille Coandro. To ensure students are actively listening, I instruct them to say “ah-choo” each time they hear the word “sneeze.”

Not only do we see the leaves on each page of the book, but at the end of the story (damage alert!) the old lady spits out a scarecrow, which is another seasonal symbol for us to work with. We had an interesting discussion about the purpose of a scarecrow. Some kids know it as a bird repellent, while others claim it’s a Halloween decoration. Ultimately, we agreed that both uses are important.

After the story it was time to turn the story around so we learned the scarecrow dance using videos forSong of the ScarecrowsameLearning station on YouTube. I almost used the video/songDancing like a scarecrowbut in the end I like how “Puppet Song” repeats itself over and over again, picking up a little bit faster each time. This gave the kids a chance to practice the choreography and they really liked it when things got faster the longer you made them.

Then we do small motor skills with aScarecrow coloring page. Some students surprised me with how well they colored, others just scribbled. They are all proud of what they have created, as shown by how enthusiastically they took the time to ‘show and tell’ when we returned to the carpet to share the photos.
